College Football Betting Analysis: Teams to Follow
North Dakota State
North Dakota State makes the first of its four remaining road trips this weekend, heading to Las Vegas to face UNLV. The Bison aren’t the most athletically gifted group at the FBS level. However, they all know their assignment on every play and display better team defense than just about any other program in the nation.
UNLV looked soft in their Week Zero matchup against Memphis. The Rebels are a bit soft in the middle of their offense and can be run against on defense. North Dakota State is not soft anywhere on defense and will ground and pound opponents into submission.
UNLV allows opponents to score in the red zone at an 88.2% rate. North Dakota State scores in the red zone at an 88.9% rate. If the Bison get close, they’re going to punch it in against the Rebels. North Dakota State also doesn’t allow opponents to move the ball that much. The Bison have one of the most efficient defenses in the country, and UNLV quarterback Jackson Arnold may not get the time he needs to make second or third reads.
The Bison are tough and efficient just about everywhere on the field. UNLV has shown that they’re not at times. The Bison won’t be intimidated by the environment, and there’s a non-zero chance that Bison fans outnumber UNLV fans in Las Vegas. It’s hard to see an outcome other than NDSU rolling to another win in the Mountain West Conference.
Best Bet: North Dakota State -3.5
Missouri
The Missouri Tigers play host to the Texas A&M Aggies this weekend in Columbia, MO. Columbia has been a tough place to play for decades, and that was proven last week as the Tigers rolled the Florida Gators by 28 points.
Missouri comes into this game with a clear advantage on the offensive end, and the defensive matchup is a lot closer than most would think. The Tigers are 12th in the nation in EPA per play, while the Aggies rank in the 40s. Missouri can run or throw in just about any situation. Tigers quarterback Austin Simmons is quietly putting together a Heisman-worthy season with a 67.9% completion rate, over 1,200 yards passing, and 13 touchdown passes compared to zero interceptions. Running back Jamal Roberts has filled in for Ahmad Hardy while he recovers from an offseason injury, and has compiled over 600 yards on the ground with six touchdowns.
Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has flashed at times, but he’s thrown four interceptions and been sacked nine times this year. His completion rate is also only 57.0%. Missouri has shown it has the ability to rush the passer, and making Reed uncomfortable is the key to keeping the Aggies off-balance on offense. Given the location, Missouri’s efficiency on offense, and the Tigers’ pass rush, this is a clear spot to ride with the favorite at home.
Best Bet: Missouri -3.5
College Football Betting Analysis: Teams to Fade
Pittsburgh
Pitt enters this weekend undefeated with a number next to its name and a backup quarterback forced into a starting role. North Carolina travels to Pittsburgh for this game and comes in as an underdog. This looks like a great opportunity to fade a team that has a 5-0 record without playing the toughest schedule.
The strength of the Pitt offense has been its ground game, but North Carolina may choose to stack the box and dare the backup quarterback to make throws. North Carolina needs to limit the success of the Pitt running attack on early downs and force the Pitt offense to throw. North Carolina’s pass defense has been solid this year, and should be able to handle Pitt’s second-string quarterback.
When North Carolina has the ball, they need to take advantage of a Pitt pass defense that struggles to generate pressure and can be attacked through the air. The key is Tar Heels quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. making plays. Edwards was able to throw for three touchdown passes against a tough Notre Dame defense, so he shouldn’t find too big of an obstacle in Pitt’s secondary.
Best Bet: North Carolina +3.5
USC
USC travels to Happy Valley this weekend for a matchup with Penn State. The Trojans have to travel cross-country and are off a close win over Washington. Penn State has dropped two in a row. The Nittany Lions lost to Wisconsin at home and followed that with a road loss to Northwestern. This is the foxhole spot of foxhole spots for Matt Campbell and Penn State.
Almost all of the metrics favor USC, especially after Penn State got gashed for over 400 yards against Northwestern. USC quarterback Jordan Maiava has generated explosive plays while maintaining a completion rate over 60% for the Trojans. USC has a hefty offensive line and can run the ball. However, Penn State has been solid on the offensive end and should move the ball through the air and on the ground against a USC defense that has looked leaky at times.
The angle here is the travel and home-field advantage for Penn State. If the Nittany Lions can get a few early stops and build a lead in the first two quarters, they should be able to stay in this one. A win here is much needed for a head coach in his first year. USC has often struggled with travel. Happy Valley is one of the harder places to get to in the Big Ten. Let’s ride with the home-field advantage, tough travel, and desperation to get Penn State to a win in this one.
Best Bet: Penn State -1.5
