You know it’s the first week of the college hoops season when we get an absolute banger of a Friday night slate right out of the gate. Fridays often feature a lot of America East games with a few power programs mixed in. This Friday? We get a nice, beefy slate of non-conference games. We’ve already sniffed out a few crooked numbers that the books are going to regret. Let’s go through our college basketball picks for November 6th.

East Tennessee State at NC State
State Time: 7:00 PM EST
East Tennessee State tipped off their season against Arizona State in Tempe, AZ, and only lost by 10 points. The Buccaneers were catching 19.5 points in their first game. NC State beat Campbell by 19 points, but the Wolfpack was laying 24.5.
ETSU enters the year with only one returning starter from last year, but they’re expected to contend for the SoCon regular season title. The Buccaneers have a few other returning rotation pieces, and brought in a solid portal class. They also have at least two players who could contend for SoCon Player of the Year in forward Jordan McCollum and SEMO transfer BJ Ward. ETSU has a capable back court and enough size to stay in this game.
NC State is in year one with coach Justin Gainey, and had to turn over almost their entire roster after Will Wade’s departure. The Wolfpack should finish in the top half of the ACC, but they’re still a work in progress. NC State also allowed Campbell to pile up points in the second half and catch an easy back-door cover. ETSU is a lot better than Campbell and should keep this one a lot closer. This is a case of… too many points.
Best Bet: East Tennessee State +17.5
Wagner at Miami (FL)
Start Time: 9:00 PM EST
Wagner lost to Boston College on the road in their season opener. Miami is off a 10-point loss to Florida in their season opener.
Wagner was only giving up 20.5 points against Boston College and lost by 26. Now, they’re only catching 31.5 points against Miami? They might lose by 50. The Hurricanes are off a loss in the season opener to Florida and get to take out any frustrations on a team in Wagner that is extremely challenged on the offensive end. This is a classic matchup of athletes versus staples. This rarely goes well for the staples.
A lot of these massive lines in buy games have been hitting, and this looks like the biggest mismatch of the day. The only look-ahead for Miami is to the football game on Saturday. They should be able to put it on a Wagner team that has grit but lacks athleticism. The Hurricanes should be able to name their score, while Wagner might not break 50 points.
Best Bet: Miami -31.5
Oakland at Stanford
Start Time: 10:00 PM EST
Oakland opened their season at Michigan and lost by 16 points as a 27-point underdog. Stanford played its home opener against Eastern Washington and only won by nine points as a 14.5-point favorite.
Oakland doesn’t return any starters from last year’s team, but they’re expected to finish in the top five in the Horizon League this year. The Golden Grizzlies do bring back several rotation pieces from last year’s team and added size through the portal. Greg Kampe has been at Oakland for 42 years. He’s won buy games before, and this Stanford team looks like it’s going to get clipped by someone.
Stanford struggled to close out against Eastern Washington in their season opener. The Cardinal only return one starter from last year and have a very young roster from top to bottom. They have the makings of a good roster, but it’s going to take time and may not even be this year. Oakland may not be as athletic, but they have a lot of older players and a lot of roster continuity. Oakland may not win, but they should keep this within double digits.
Best Bet: Oakland +14.5
