Wagering on Today’s on the NFL: How to Place a Bet That Actually Pays

NFL Season Opener: Seahawks vs. Patriots Best Bets

Every fall, millions of people tune in to watch NFL football. There’s  a reason this is America’s favorite sport. Football has a lot to offer fans. It’s not just the touchdowns and Hail Mary plays that make football fun to watch. This is an unpredictable, nail biting game. For many fans, betting on a game can add yet another element of novelty and excitement to the game day experience. Betting on football is a fairly simple process, but it’s good to understand a few basics before you place your first wager. One of the things that makes betting on football so fun is that there are truly so many different kinds of bets and ways to cash in. Of course, there are no sure things in gambling, so knowing how to bet responsibly is important too.

  • Knowing the Foundations of NFL Betting

  • Betting on football means placing a wager on what you think will happen during the game. Simply put, different types of bets come with different levels of risk and potential pay out. Before you visit a sportsbook, you should familiarize yourself with the concept of odds, as well as the different kinds of bets.
  • Three popular ways to approach football betting are: the point spread, the moneyline, spreads, and the over or under. Here is what each of those bets entail.
  • Point spread In every game, one team has advantages or a higher chance of winning the game. This could be due to anything from that team’s travel schedule to the general talent of their players. When a team is favored, they will need to win by a certain amount of extra points in order for a bet “against the spread” to pay off.
  • Moneyline This is simpler than betting against the spread. If you just want to bet on which team will win or lose a game without worrying about the points, you bet the money line. This is a good option when you have a hunch or just want to bet on the team you’re already rooting for.
  • Over/under This is another simple way of betting. Over or under simply means that you are wagering on whether the total points scored in a game will be over or under a certain amount. It can be fun to bet the over, because you are rooting for both sides to show up and put numbers on the board.
  • What Influences Bets on Football Games?

  • Deciding how to bet can be a bit of a research project. Knowing what will make a smart wager means reading the news about the teams you’re betting on. The more informed you are about what’s been going in with both teams, the smarter your bet will be.
  • How have both teams been playing lately?  This is a good place to start. You can look at stats like a team’s efficiency on offense. How has its defense been playing? You’ll want to see how often both teams are turning over. How often are they missing field goals?
  • Injuries and player availability The health of a team is one of the most important factors to consider. This is something than can change right up to kick off, so make sure you’re listening to podcasts and watching the news for updates. If a quarterback or key members of a team’s defensive line are out, you likely will not want to bet on that team. This may also be a reason to bet on the opposing team.

Who is the home team? When points are being set, some points are generally given to the team that is playing in their home stadium. The reason for this is somewhat obvious. A team playing where they are used to practicing and in front of a familiar crowd will likely perform better. The home team will also not have to travel, which can impact performance. Another factor to consider is the weather during the game. If it’s a snowy game in the Northeast, a team that’s used to warmer temperatures in the southwest may be at a serious disadvantage.

In general, the smartest way to bet is always to understand as much as you possibly can about the match you’re wagering on. The more informed you can be, the higher your chances of hitting your bet. If you’re new to betting on football, remember it’s always a good idea to start small. Never bet more money tan you would be comfortable losing.
