Dantabase College Football Week 9 Weekday Games Preview & Top 25 Recap
The College Football Experience on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its Week 9 weekday games preview with Colby Dant (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac), plus the Dantabase Top 25 and the Land Down Under. Is Sam Houston State finally worth backing at Missouri State? Can Sac State hang with Kent State?
Is UCLA still the top team in the country? Does Texas deserve its spot after one road game? Is Charlotte live against Tulane? Who wins a Holy War rematch for the Big 12 title? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
The Land Down Under Pop Quiz Hits The Hot Seat
The Land Down Under opens with pop quiz hot shot, and Ryan McIntyre answers first. He says Brian Kelly will be coaching college football next season, and he picks Rutgers as the landing spot. Then he sends Eric Morris to Texas Tech, which tracks because Morris played with Cody Campbell. For this week’s most likely upset, Mac ranks Arkansas first because it is the only home dog in the group. In the Group of Five, Charlotte over Tulane is the pick, and Colby Dant promises more on that later in the episode. Next comes the blowout question, and Mac says Sonny Dykes is the coach most likely to lose his job. Colby’s answer is Whittingham, and Mac agrees a two-score loss at Rutgers would get him fired.
The conference title questions get messier from there. Mac’s Big 12 final answer is a Holy War rematch between Utah and BYU. Colby believes Arizona is going to the title game if it beats Texas Tech this week. Troy adds a betting angle on Oklahoma State. If you bet them to get there, he says, bet them to win it too, since the game is in a dome. In the American, Mac trusts UTSA and Army, crediting Saturday’s win for Monken. Also, the guys float a Wisconsin vs. UCLA Big Ten title game, and Mac calls that hilarious. Then Mac names Kent State vs. Sac State the dumbest game of the week, because Sac State shouldn’t even be in the FBS.
The Dantabase Top 25 Puts UCLA At Number One
The Dantabase Top 25 runs on resume, and Colby weights road wins above everything else. That’s why UTSA jumps Liberty and Oregon State at No. 25, since Oregon State doesn’t have a good win. Minnesota sits 24th, ahead of Wisconsin, because the Gophers won at Washington and beat Iowa and Michigan. Colby calls the Wisconsin resume trash, with Michigan State as its third best win. JMU lands at 23 and New Mexico at 22. Then Alabama hangs on at 21, and Kentucky is the win saving that resume. Tennessee goes 20th, just above Bama, because the Vols won the head-to-head and Mac says Alabama got whipped up front.
Ole Miss sits 19th. Colby thinks Trinidad Chambliss is the best quarterback in the nation, but the Rebels haven’t proven much on the road. Texas at 18 sets off the rant of the night. The Longhorns have played one road game on a college campus, a 20-17 win at Tennessee. Their second won’t come until November 7, and the regular season ends November 28. Colby pulled up Arkansas for comparison, and the Razorbacks have four road games in that same span. So he calls it his top argument for a 2014 playoff. Mac adds that Texas is 11th in the new poll while Arizona is 22nd. Colby has Arizona 11th, because the Wildcats already went to Provo and head to Lubbock this week.
The top ten opens with Texas Tech at 10, Georgia at 9 and BYU at 8. Wake Forest is seventh as the only team in the nation with four road wins. Its last three wins came by 54, 24 and 34 against Power Five teams. The poll has the Deacs at 14, which is more respect than Mac expected. Indiana is sixth, Kentucky fifth and Ohio State fourth. Utah is third and undefeated, though Colby says Houston is its only good win. Miami is second at 3-0 on the road, with wins at Wake, Clemson and Stanford. And UCLA stays No. 1, also 3-0 on the road with no FCS game. Mac agrees. UCLA and Cal were tied midway through the fourth in Week 1, he notes, before UCLA ran off 21 straight.
Week 9 Weekday Games Preview: Tuesday And Wednesday Bets
Tuesday opens with Conference USA action as Delaware visits Western Kentucky, and Colby Dant calls it a banger. Both teams sit at 3-4, but the Hilltoppers played a brutal nonconference schedule. So the first play is the over 57.5, with Troy’s weather check showing only a 16% chance of rain. Colby also backs the Blue Hens, even while admitting their defense has been bad. Ryan McIntyre rides Delaware off the momentum and says the Blue Hens offense is the best unit on the field. It is a revenge spot too, because Delaware lost a close Friday night game to the Tops. Then the line flipped to Delaware during the show, which Mac reads as their injured quarterback playing. A Western Kentucky -1.5 was still out there, so shop around.
Sam Houston is on the card again, and the guys are going back to the well at Missouri State. The Bearkats get +4.5 and +170 on the moneyline, and Colby is betting both with more on the spread. The numbers back him up. Missouri State ranks 130th in points allowed, while Sam Houston has the fourth best pass defense in the nation. That matters because Missouri State can’t run, sitting 112th in rushing, so it has to throw into that strength. Also, the Missouri State pass defense is 121st, and Sam Houston’s 61st-ranked passing attack is the closest thing it has to an offensive strength. Mac calls it a Taco Tuesday winner, and both hosts jump on Troy’s +155 first half moneyline.
Wednesday moves to Johnny Red Floyd Stadium, where Kennesaw State is +115 on the moneyline against Middle Tennessee. Colby says Kennesaw State is the better team, and the record just doesn’t show it yet. Mac laid out the case last week, because Jerry Mack’s team had three straight one-score losses before Liberty. And now you get to fade Middle Tennessee off a 10-point dog outright win. That is a double lock on the Kennesaw State moneyline. Next comes Jacksonville State at New Mexico State, and Colby is laying the 3.5 and calling a seven-point win. He even holds New Mexico State under 4.5 wins, with the Aggies sitting on three, and refuses to hedge. Mac agrees, noting Jax State comes off a bye, so it’s another double lock.
Thursday Night Brings FCS Bangers And The Mean Green
Thursday starts in the FCS, with South Carolina State taking a 6-2 record to Baltimore to face Morgan State. The Bulldogs won the Celebration Bowl a year ago, and the series dates back to 1971. No spread was posted at taping, but Troy found Morgan State at +165 on an exchange. Mac goes with the Bulldogs, and Colby leans the same way depending on the number. The guys plan to nail down that line on Wednesday’s show. Then it’s Division II, as Fort Valley State visits Miles in a series that goes back to 1940. Mac takes Miles at home, and the game should be streaming on YouTube for anyone who wants it.
The Sun Belt title game rematch is where the hosts split. Colby grabbed Troy at +21 right before the show, and he would still take the Trojans at 20.5. Troy lost to JMU by 17 in December and just got embarrassed by ULM, but three touchdowns is a lot. Mac goes the other way and backs a JMU ambush in Harrisonburg. He will be there Thursday night, and he says beers are on him at Jack Brown’s and Billy Jack’s. So if you’re in town and on the Dukes, find Mac downtown. Colby is happy to battle him on this one and stay with the Trojans.
Then comes a gigantic game in the American, as Florida Atlantic visits North Texas. The Mean Green lay 13.5, and both hosts are laying it. Florida Atlantic has the second worst rushing defense in the country at 137th, and Jaheim White is running through people. North Texas also has the second best passing offense in the country and ranks second in points. Mac calls it a brutal spot for the Owls after back-to-back triple option games, including getting boat raced at Army. Then Rice put up 620 yards on them in a near loss. The total sits at 77.5, and Colby also takes the over on Troy’s North Texas team total of 45.5.
Friday Night Dogs And The Sac State Best Bet
Friday starts in Charlotte, where Tulane visits Jerry Richardson Stadium and the home side gets 10.5. Colby is locking up the points and calls Charlotte live on the moneyline. His case is that the gap is smaller than the spread suggests. Charlotte ranks 127th in offense, but Tulane is only 116th. Defensively, Charlotte ranks 136th and Tulane sits at 122nd. Also, Charlotte just won, and it held Temple to 31, its best defensive showing outside the Citadel game. Mac doesn’t think Tulane is that good, and he sprinkles the moneyline too. Colby adds a first half moneyline on top, because he can see Tulane finding a gut check in the fourth quarter.
The rivalry slate keeps going later Friday with Harvard at Dartmouth on ESPNU, a series that dates to 1882. Harvard is 6-0 even after losing Jaden Craig to TCU. But Colby thinks Dartmouth is better than its record. Its losses came by four to Lehigh and three to Monmouth. No spread was out, just Dartmouth at +155 on the moneyline. If it lands around 4.5 or 5.5, both hosts would take Dartmouth. Meanwhile, Virginia Union visits Lincoln in a series that started in 1916, and both hosts take Lincoln at home. Then Willamette visits George Fox in a series dating to 1894, where Colby takes Willamette and Mac takes George Fox.
Baylor at UCF is the triple lock of the week, with the guys on the Bears moneyline. Troy says that bet has already been placed, and he calls Baylor’s outright win a double bounce spot. Then the slate closes with Kent State laying 9.5 at Sac State. Both hosts take Sac State on the points, and Mac is also playing the moneyline. Sac State quarterback Conklin was questionable at taping, and Kent State let FCS Wofford take a halftime lead earlier this year. So Mac builds a Friday dog parlay on the Charlotte, Baylor and Sac State moneylines, somewhere around 30 to 33 to 1. When Colby asks for the weekday game Mac feels best about, the answer is Sac State, and Colby agrees.
