College Football Week 8 Reaction Show Recap
The College Football Experience with Pick Dundee (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its College Football Week 8 Reaction Show, with Troy Chewning (@Troychewning) joining to go through every game from a weekend full of dog money lines cashing.
Was Baylor right to fire Dave Aranda in the middle of the year? Who should NC State call after Dave Doeren? How did Ryan McIntyre roll a $5,000 bet on West Virginia into roughly 20 grand? Is UCLA the best team in the country? Can Northwestern make the playoff? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Baylor And NC State Pull The Plug
Before a single game gets graded, the guys open on the coaching carousel. Baylor fired Dave Aranda in the middle of the year. And Troy Chewning, the Baylor fan in the booth, agrees with the call. He also admits he was surprised the school had the guts to do it midseason. Then Ryan McIntyre goes further and says Aranda should have been gone last year after a five and seven finish. Klanderman, last year’s Kansas State defensive coordinator, takes over as interim. So who gets the job? Troy likes Jeff Traylor or G.J. Kinney. Lincoln Riley keeps coming up too, because he nearly landed in Waco once before. But Colby Dant has his own answer, and he would call Jason Eck first no matter the opening.
NC State also moved on from Dave Doeren after a loss to Stanford on the farm. The rumor mill has high school coach Philip Rivers near the top of the list, and Mac wants no part of it. He says the Wolfpack would be bad for a long time. He also says Rivers would be fired within three years. Colby, meanwhile, is openly rooting for the Rivers hire. Instead, Mac thinks Jamie Chadwell fits perfectly in Raleigh, and Colby agrees it works. Colby also floats Brian Kelly as a pretty good hire who could win eight or nine games a year. Then Charles Huff and Charlie Weis Jr. get mentioned as names worth a phone call.
Boone, Huntington And A Fire Start To The Week
The week started with a banger. Delaware dropped 61 points on Missouri State with Minucci back, and the guys cashed it. Then Marshall took down South Alabama 20 to 13 in Huntington, the first of many money lines to hit. Mac was on that one with Colby, and he credits Gibby’s defense for getting stops out of the bye. Colby went 3 and 0 on his Tuesday card. But the Sam Houston loss stung so much that Mac refuses to even talk about it. Now the Bearkats play at Missouri State on Tuesday night as seven-point dogs. So naturally, Colby is already thinking about going back to the well.
Then came Boone. Colby and Mac were in the building for App State’s overtime win over JMU, and they stormed the field. That video is up on YouTube and Instagram. Colby had the points and the money line, though he wishes he had played the over. Mac calls Kidd Brewer Stadium a bucket-list stop and puts the game in his top 10 to 15 ever. App trailed the whole way, gave it away late and then the crowd willed them home in overtime. The stadium also ran out of IPAs, so Colby was drinking Twisted Tea by the fourth quarter. Meanwhile ECU covered as a 10.5-point dog at Memphis, and Colby was smart enough to skip the money line.
Duke, Army And A Friday Night Parlay
Friday brought pain and profit in equal measure. Colby took Virginia, and Duke rallied in the fourth quarter to win at Scott Stadium anyway. Nate Shepherd’s halfback pass with about a minute left was the play call of the night. Duke is now 5 and 2 under Manny Diaz, so Colby’s preseason pick on the Duke under looks dead. Then Army stole one from Tulsa. Tulsa missed a chip-shot field goal, went three and out and had a punt blocked. So Mac won the lock battle on the Black Knights, and Colby lost his money. Still, the night ended in style. Colby parlayed the Wyoming money line with the Stanford money line over NC State, and both dogs won outright.
Wyoming’s win came on the legs of Tyler Hughes. He ran 12 times for 146 yards and a score, and Colby compares one run to Barry Sanders. Hughes also threw for two touchdowns, so the Cowboys are now in the Mountain West mix. Meanwhile Davis Warren threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns for Stanford, and Michael Ford ran for 150. The farm only had a sparse crowd, but that did not matter to anyone holding the parlay. Colby says he also had the points on both games, so he hit it three different ways. And Troy points out the farm was strong enough to beat the usual Wolfpack curse.
The College Football Week 8 Reaction Show Rollover In Fort Worth
The biggest bet of the week belongs to Ryan McIntyre. Producer Backstage Messiah pitched a rollover, and Mac went all in on Cincinnati first. Then he rolled it into a $5,000 money line ticket on West Virginia at TCU. It cashed for about $20,500. Troy texted him that morning to ask if the rollover was on, and Mac answered with a simple yes. He even called his shot the night before, tweeting that the Mountaineers would win 31-27 on a stop. They won by four, and a strip sack ended it. Mac admits the defense still gave up yards. But it forced three turnovers, and that was enough. Then he stayed at the bar until 6 AM, so the staff earned a game ball too.
The win meant more than money. Rich Rod lost his best friend this week, and his team is now 5 and 3, one win away from a bowl. West Virginia has also won outright twice this year as a three-to-one dog. So Mac counts the Mountaineers at five and three against the spread. Colby is not backing them for shtick, because he saw a real matchup edge in both upsets. He also wants credit for calling Michael Hawkins a problem back in February or March. Meanwhile Mac has a bye week and is driving to Lubbock on an itinerary written on a bar receipt. He will not roll the whole account into that game, though.
Cincinnati, Illinois And The Dogs Kept Barking
The money lines kept coming at Nippert Stadium. Colby had Cincinnati on the points, the full-game money line and the first-half money line. Then the Bearcats beat Texas Tech by two scores. His point is simple. Cincinnati runs about an $11 million payroll, while AI pegs the Red Raiders somewhere between $35 and $40 million. So the gap in talent is smaller than the spending suggests. Mac goes further and says this Texas Tech team is not getting to Dallas. Troy also shouts out the Bob Huggins parlay, two 10.5-point dogs on the money line in West Virginia and Cincinnati. And Jay North finally got bullied into a good pick, so he owes the guys beers in Vegas.
Illinois over Oregon was a triple lock on the money line, and Troy played it too. The Ducks fell to 4 and 3, so Mac declared them eliminated from the playoff on the spot. Earlier, Indiana laid 6.5 and beat Michigan 13-6. Colby somehow cashed it, even though Indiana had one second-half completion and it was an interception. LSU also beat Auburn for its first road win under Lane Kiffin, a lock battle the other two won. But the Northwestern loss stung, because the Wildcats led Rutgers 21 to 3 after one quarter. Next they go to Eugene, and Colby will start the playoff talk if they win there.
The Group of 5 had its own surprises. Hawaii was a contest play for the guys, and Colby went in too. Then Timmy Chang’s team won 56-21 in DeKalb as Micah Alejandro threw for 323. North Texas also hung 49 on Navy with Jaheim White running for 175, though the guys were on the Midshipmen. Navy opened the year as the odds-on Group of 5 playoff favorite and now sits 2 and 5. Meanwhile Rice lost to FAU despite 608 yards of offense. Their backup quarterback ran for 259 yards and four scores. But the Owls still missed the game-winning field goal.
Late Window Locks And Bad Beats
The late window paid. Boston College was another triple lock on the money line, and the Eagles trailed 13-12 at the half before taking over. UCF also hit on the money line over BYU in what Colby calls the wildest game of the day. Backup Keon Jenkins played his tail off, and a late 10-second runoff call had even the rules experts arguing. Then Colby and Mac locked up South Carolina minus 2.5 over Tennessee. Troy went live on the Gamecocks after Tennessee had a second touchdown called back. Syracuse added the final money line hit when the Orange went for two and won at North Carolina. And Texas over Ole Miss cashed, because everybody was on Ole Miss except the guys.
Not everything landed. Colby bet Troy minus 13.5, and ULM won outright at the Vet. Troy Chewning backed the Trojans too and calls it the most shocking result of the week. Colby also had the Eastern Michigan money line until Ohio returned a kickoff 100 yards with three minutes left. He took the points as well, so there was a silver lining. Then Houston plus 6.5 lost on a late Utah cover that Troy hammered, because he expected Devon Dampier to decide it with the ball late. Finally, Colby pushed on North Dakota State at 5. Jason Eck’s New Mexico won a terrific game in Albuquerque, and the pick six was the difference.
Minnesota Plus 19.5 And The Game Balls
The best bet for next week came out of Minnesota’s 13-10 win over Iowa, which Colby cashed. Now the Gophers are 19.5-point dogs at Indiana, and Mac’s reaction was immediate: lock up Minnesota. Troy is riding with PJ Fleck too, because Fleck wins the games the boosters want him to win. He even floats the first-half money line. Colby still thinks Indiana wins, but he concedes the 19.5 got him. He adds that if Minnesota wins in Bloomington, he is taking UCLA in Minneapolis the next week. The network also holds a 70-1 ticket on Minnesota to make the playoff, though Mac says the Gophers need to finish 10 and 2.
Then the game balls. Colby hands one to ULM for its first win of the season and another to UCF. He saves his last for New Mexico, because that stadium finally rocks like The Pit. Mac goes with Rich Rod and West Virginia first, then App State. And he closes with the Cincinnati upset of Texas Tech. Troy picks Boston College on the road and Utah’s late-night win. Finally, he splits his last ball between the Minnesota and South Carolina field storms. The blacked-out Gamecocks crowd was cooler to him, but a 90-pound bronze pig is hard to top.
