College Football Week 8 Preview & Picks Recap

The College Football Experience on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its Week 8 college football picks with Colby Dant (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac), joined by Bet Detective CJ Sullivan, while the guys sweat a live Sam Houston bet the whole way through.

Who should Maryland hire after firing Mike Locksley? Is Auburn live as a home dog against LSU? Can Michigan State cover 14.5 at UCLA? Does Kansas beat Baylor outright? Is Alabama the kill shot against Texas A&M? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.

Sam Houston Sweats And Maryland Fires Locksley

The show opens live with Sam Houston State clinging to a 10-7 lead, and the crew has money on it. Colby Dant comes in hot off a 3-0 day that included the Marshall moneyline. Ryan McIntyre, aka Moneyline Mack, also holds Sam Houston at three and a half with a moneyline sprinkle. Then the Bet Detective, CJ Sullivan (@CJSullivan_), caves. He wanted no part of Sam Houston before the show, but he grabs five and a half and sprinkles the moneyline at +210. Later he adds a shot at +600 too. So the sweat runs under the whole episode, and it ends with a Sam Houston loss.

The first real storyline is Maryland firing Mike Locksley. It came four days after Locksley fired his defensive coordinator, who might have made a good interim coach. Colby Dant admits he had the slide ready a month ago, back when he passed along fake news. Mack’s first name for the job is Jake Dickert, and he also bets the hire ends up being Neil Brown. The Bet Detective wants Frank Reich, the old Terps quarterback behind one of the biggest comebacks in college football history. Because Reich has won at every level, he pitches it as the perfect homecoming. Meanwhile Dundee floats Dan Mullen, then Charles Huff or Raheem Morris. But he also expects Maryland to botch the search, because Maryland usually does.

Boone, The Ivy League And The Friday Night Card

Colby Dant and Ryan McIntyre are headed to Boone for JMU at App State tomorrow night. Dundee calls it the Field of Dreams of football stadiums, and the Bet Detective wants the mountain shots. He admits he was dead wrong fading JMU last week. But he fades them again with App State plus 10 and a half, just because of the rivalry. So App State is a triple lock. Next comes Kennesaw State against Liberty, and the Owls have won three straight in the series. The line is down to eight and a half, so the Bet Detective takes Kennesaw on the points with no bet. Because Liberty is steamrolling, he refuses to get in front of them.

ECU catches 10 and a half at Memphis, and Dundee takes the points. The Pirates have won 10 of 12 against Memphis, which is plenty for him. The Bet Detective sees a Memphis bounce back spot and leans that way with no bet. Then Duke visits Virginia, which lays one and a half in a rematch of last year’s ACC title game. And Duke won that one in overtime. The guys already locked up Virginia, but the Bet Detective calls Virginia a fraud and takes Duke, no bet. Yale at Penn also splits the room. Dundee lays three and a half with Yale, his pick to win the Ivy, and the Bet Detective joins him. But Mack takes Penn as a home dog he thinks is better than its record.

Friday night carries some of the strongest opinions of the week. UConn lays 14 and a half against UMass in a series that goes back to 1897. Dundee bets UMass because 14 and a half is too much, and the Bet Detective bets it too. So the Minutemen land as a triple lock. Army at Tulsa turns into a battle, with Mack on Army and the Bet Detective calling for Tulsa by double digits. He trusts the Tulsa defensive line, and Dundee notes it is Tulsa’s third straight week against an option team. Mack and the Bet Detective also both like Wyoming against Air Force. Then the nightcap is easy, with Stanford getting a triple lock as a home dog against Notre Dame.

The Week 8 College Football Picks Board Opens In Fort Worth

Saturday starts in Fort Worth, where West Virginia catches nine and a half against TCU. TCU comes off a rivalry win over Baylor, and Dundee admits the West Virginia defense is terrible. But he takes West Virginia plus the points anyway and sprinkles the moneyline, which he sees at +280. Mack goes further and calls for an outright win. Rich Rod lost his best friend, Ike Morris, this week. Mack also says the TCU defense is good but has not seen Michael Hawkins and Cam Cook. The Bet Detective hates the spot but stays loyal with the points, no bet. So it goes down as a double lock, and West Virginia ranks second on Dundee’s top seven.

Indiana at Michigan is the first real fight. The Hoosiers were listed at seven and a half, but Dundee sees six and a half on the board. He locks up Indiana anyway, because that defensive line did damage against Ohio State. Mack battles him with Michigan and calls it a field goal game, Indiana 20-16. The Bet Detective also takes Michigan. Because the total sits at 41 and a half, he expects a rock fight against a top-five Michigan defense. Then Rutgers catches 16 and a half at Northwestern, and both Dundee and Mack lock Rutgers. Mack adds the first half moneyline at 4 to 1, while the Bet Detective takes Northwestern.

The dogs keep barking in the early window. Cincinnati catches 10 and a half at home against Texas Tech, and the Bet Detective says that number was 14. Texas Tech also has Arizona on deck, while Mack calls it a personal game for the Bearcats. So Cincinnati is a triple lock, and Dundee takes a shot on the moneyline and first half moneyline too. Rice catches seven and a half against Florida Atlantic, and the Bet Detective locks Rice with a 27-24 call. Mack locks Rice as well, since he bets on Rice every week. Then Dundee bets Auburn plus seven and a half against LSU and sprinkles the moneyline on top. But Mack battles him with LSU, saying Auburn has to prove it again.

Kansas is a short home dog against Baylor, and Mack and the Bet Detective both call for the outright win. Dundee takes Kansas without a lock, because he was the lone guy on Kansas last week. So the Jayhawks go down as a double lock. Toledo also draws locks from Mack and the Bet Detective. The Rockets are rolling like Liberty was a month ago, while Dundee likes Western Michigan outright. Then everyone piles onto Illinois, off a bye, against an Oregon team the Bet Detective calls a mess. He adds the Illini first half moneyline on the triple lock. All three back Navy against North Texas too, because Mack calls it a Neil Brown special.

Oklahoma and Mississippi State only produces a total play. Kamario Taylor is questionable, so Dundee and the Bet Detective lock the under 44 and a half. Next, Northern Illinois gets a triple lock against a Hawaii team the Bet Detective calls broken. Then comes Dundee’s top play, Michigan State plus 14 and a half at UCLA. He projects a 21-10 UCLA win, and Mack sees 17-10, so Sparty becomes another triple lock. Minnesota plus six and a half against Iowa is also a triple lock. The Bet Detective notes the Gophers run only about 40% of the time, so the Iowa run defense matters less. And Dundee likes Iowa 20-14, which still cashes the Minnesota ticket.

Foxhole Spots And Saturday’s Late Board

Boston College plus five and a half at Georgia Tech is a coaching-tree play. Bill O’Brien coached Brent Key and George Godsey in college, and Godsey now runs the Georgia Tech offense. BC defensive coordinator Ted Roof also went against Godsey in practice every day. So Dundee calls it a moneyline play, and BC lands as a triple lock. UCF off the bye against BYU is another moneyline triple lock. Mack locks South Carolina at minus two and a half for his third time backing them this year. The first two times, the Gamecocks blew a 16-0 lead to Mississippi State and a 17-0 lead to Kentucky. Then Alabama minus 14 and a half against Texas A&M is the kill shot. The Bet Detective sees a 38-10 game and calls it his contest play of the week.

The smaller conferences get just as much love. Eastern Michigan catches 12 and a half at Ohio, owner of the country’s longest home winning streak at 16 games. But it is a triple lock anyway, with the first half moneyline at +270 as a kicker. Old Dominion plus 13 and a half fades a Louisiana Tech team that just beat two old rivals. So the Monarchs land a double lock in the letdown spot. San Jose State and Washington State also pick up double locks as dogs. Then Colorado State plus one and a half against San Diego State becomes the loudest foxhole on the board. It is a triple lock, and the Bet Detective wants it in the contest.

The night window brings the biggest swings. Syracuse plus nine and a half at North Carolina is a triple lock, with Steve Angeli questionable. Dundee also locks Texas minus three and a half against Ole Miss as the ultimate foxhole spot. Iowa State plus 10 and a half at Arizona is another triple lock, because Arizona has Texas Tech on deck. But USC at Wisconsin splits the table. Dundee lays two and a half with the Trojans, while Mack and the Bet Detective take Wisconsin. The Bet Detective goes further and calls for the outright win in Madison. Then North Dakota State plus four and a half and the under 41 and a half get triple locks. Finally, Houston plus six and a half at Utah closes the board as one more triple lock.

The Mack In A Box Card And The Top Seven

Before the card, the chat catches a skipped game. Kansas State lays three and a half against Arizona State, with the total at 56 and a half. Dundee bets the Sun Devils plus the points, because Kansas State comes off a rivalry win. He calls it a foxhole spot and a moneyline play, and Mack and the Bet Detective both join. Then Mack in a Box sets its seven contest plays. The card is Toledo minus three and a half, Colorado State plus one and a half and Cincinnati plus 10 and a half. It also carries Kansas plus three, Alabama minus 13 and a half, Wisconsin plus two and a half and Northern Illinois. And not one Team TMZ game made it, which the Bet Detective makes sure to point out.

Mack in a Box sits at 26-23, three games over .500 and four games clear of Team TMZ. Then Dundee reads his own top seven, because listeners asked for it. Michigan State leads it, followed by West Virginia, Eastern Michigan, USC, Old Dominion, Boston College and Texas. Team TMZ’s card runs Indiana, UTSA, UCF, Auburn, USC, Iowa and Wyoming. So the Bet Detective gets his Indiana dig in. Mack also wanted to give out UCF but figured everybody would have it on their card. The Bet Detective calls UCF a dog with fleas anyway. His prediction is that BYU wins by seven and covers, because that is what BYU does.
