The case for Seattle started with a confession: the gambling instinct said take the Chargers again. What talked the Seattle side out of it was the shape of that Seahawks loss, which was startling to watch but came with a pick six and a bunch of short fields handed to the other team. Meanwhile the Chargers are on a road back-to-back, they can’t get out of their own way, and nobody on that offense has been getting open. The last thing that unit needs is a Seattle front four that can create a mess.
Sean’s reply began with “That’s all true, but.” He had Seattle’s head coach at 4-6 against the spread off a loss and 0-4 ATS at home, and he likes going back to teams that are 0-3 straight up and 0-3 ATS, which is exactly where he has the Chargers. He also pointed to a Chargers defense that has been forcing fumbles and to a couple of picks from Sam Darnold. The number he leaned on hardest was the Chargers quarterback as an underdog of six or more: 7-1 against the spread, 1-7 straight up. That is how Sean gets there. The Chargers lose, score a garbage-time touchdown late, and cover.
Ryan had already been burned on that idea. He was a week early on the Chargers catching seven in a desperation spot in Week 3, and he said it wasn’t fun. When Sean pitched the Chargers as the team nobody is on, Ryan took the public side and called himself a donkey. Sean’s last word was “give me the Chargers and the seven.” Ryan’s was the Chargers offensive line against that Seattle defensive line, and a flat no thank you.
