MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 23
Washington Nationals vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – ESPN
Framber Valdez is on the bump for the Tigers in this one and he’s really hitting his stride as the season comes to a close. He has allowed just three runs in his last three starts, posting a 1.50 ERA in the process. That also includes a WHIP that is just a whisper over 1.00. While the Nationals are a hard hitting team, he may have the edge here anyways. Additionally, the Nationals have been on a bit of a slide recently. They’ve scored just 22 runs over their last five games, which is over half a run per game worse than their season average.
Detroit is another team that is in a mini-skid on offense. They’ve been held to just one run in three of their last five games. That’s not a stat you want on your sheet when you have to face Cade Cavalli. Quietly, Cavalli has put up a solid season. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a start since August 7th and is rocking a 2.12 ERA in September. That’s helped to get into the top 15 of ERA in the majors with 200 strikeouts. If the NL wasn’t so chocked full of high-profile arms, he’d be talking about Cy Young votes right now.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – ESPN
Cleveland continues to be one of the very worst teams in the league at the plate. They rank 26th in run scoring and haven’t exactly been lighting the scoreboard on fire lately. Now they get Sonny Gray in his last tune up for the postseason. While he may not go late into this game, he’s going to want to make sure he’s locked in. That’s worked over his last three starts – putting up a 2.79 ERA in that span with nearly a strikeout per inning.
Although Cleveland’s bats have been lame for the whole game, the Red Sox tend to be without power in the first inning. They rank 28th in first inning scoring with only the Blue Jays and Padres ranked behind them. They’ll have a tough time breaking that trend with Foster Griffin toeing the rubber. He’s held opponents to two or less runs in five of his last seven starts. Also, the bulk of his runs allowed come late in games. As a result, I like him to get us a clean first inning in this one as well.
