MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 16

Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off this NRFI play for Wednesday is one of the very worst teams in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The Red Sox 0.43 first inning runs per game mark ranks 28th in the majors. They haven’t put up a first inning run in a week and are slumping a bit overall as well – scoring just 17 runs over their last five games (3.40 runs per game). That’s good news for anyone backing Mackenzie Gore in this one. While he’s been a bit rocky lately, he does still have high-end strikeout stuff. He’s in the top 25 of the majors in terms of strikeouts and that should help get him out of the first unscathed.

Jake Bennett gets the nod for Boston on Wednesday and his last start may have also turned off NRFI bettors. He was tagged for six runs and nine hits over 5.1 innings last time out, but he had been sharp prior to that. His previous three starts yielded a 2.84 ERA with more than a strikeout per inning. Facing Texas never really hurts your numbers as they rank 25th in the league in runs scored. Look for the bounceback from Bennett and a quick first three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 16: No (-125)

Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kansas City is in a similar boat as Texas, ranking near the bottom of the league when it comes to run scoring. However, they are on an even worse run lately. In their last five games, they’ve scored just 12 runs. The last three games have been particularly brutal – putting up just four runs in a three-game losing streak. That’s no time to be running into a guy like Cristian Javier, who has found his old form. Despite the high season-long ERA, he has dialed it in. Over his last two starts (11.0 innings), he’s rocking a 1.64 ERA with 13 strikeouts and only four hits allowed.

Daniel Lynch IV will be the one trying to bring this NRFI home for us. Since transitioning back to a starting role, Lynch has held opponents to two runs or fewer in four of his last five. His strikeout numbers are unlikely to blow anyone away, but he does keep the ball on the ground. That should help against a home run heavy top of this order. The top three hitters have combined for 76 dingers on the season. However, that has trailed off recently with them only scoring 13 runs in their last five games (2.60 per game).

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 16: No (-110)

Bonus Pick: Mariners/Angels NRFI (-130)
