MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 11
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Starting off this NRFI will be Chris Sale. You could trot him out to the mound against an all-star team right now and I’d likely still take his NRFI spot. Over his last 18.0 innings, he’s allowed just two runs (a 1.00 ERA) while striking out 21 batters. That includes mowing down seven from the Phillies in his last start in 6.0 innings of work. He gave us an NRFI in that game and I see no reason not to expect him to do the same.
While we’d trust Sale to get just about anybody out, we might also trust that just about anyone can get the Braves out now. They have really struggled at the plate over the last few games. In their last four, they’ve scored just six total runs (1.50 per game). That’s part of a larger issue they’ve had swinging since the All-Star Break. Facing Aaron Nola is unlikely to help those issues. He’s held opponents to two or less runs in six straight starts. It doesn’t feel like the Braves are poised to change that in the early part of this one.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ve seen an up and down year from Taj Bradley, but some of his recent work has his ERA again under 4.00. While that’s good, the part of his game that is the best is his strikeout stuff. He quietly has entered the top ten in the majors in strikeouts with 33 in his last four games. He’ll get the added bonus of facing a Cleveland lineup that ranks 26th in terms of scoring this season.
To close this one out, we’ll get one of the finalists for AL Rookie of the Year. Messick currently has the second lowest odds for the awards and the statistics speak to why that is. He’s 5th in the majors with a 2.53 ERA and has hit double digit strikeouts in two of his last four starts. He’s also catching the Twins at a perfect time. Minnesota has scored just 10 total runs in their last four games (2.50 per game). Messick should add to that misery here and get us an easy cash.
