Football Pick of the Day (September 2nd): NFL Futures
Defensive Rookie of the Year Market
The hosts of the mothership may not like this, but the clear play for the Defensive Rookie of the Year is Caleb Downs. When the Cowboys took him with the 11th overall pick, he was already being heralded as the steal of the draft. After seeing what he’s doing in practice, there is little doubt that is the case.
Not only is he coming in with big hype and expectations, but he also has a chance to make a big mark on a team that has a poor reputation on that side of the ball. While the Cowboys looked better after acquiring Quinnen Williams, the lingering opinion of them was not solid. As a result, if the Cowboys were to look just formidable on that side with Downs putting up numbers, he’s going to get a ton of credit.
Sauce Gardner was the last defensive back to win the award, but I think it’s about high time we got another.
