After a successful opening of their new and improved Apex, the UFC heads back out onto the road. They head to Philadelphia for a numbered event. UFC 330 is headlined by both a welterweight and a strawweight title fight. Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 330
UFC Middleweight Fight: Eric McConico vs Donte Johnson
Start Time: Saturday (8/15) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
This weekend, we get a middleweight showdown between a couple of tough middleweights. While the results have not always shown, these two have potential in a division that is clamoring for some fresh faces.
The hype was high on Donte Johnson going into his March fight with Cody Brundage. After a slow start to the first round, Johnson found himself uncharacteristically fighting from behind. The end result was a split decision win, and his stock took a hit as a result. However, I actually like what that fight showed us. He was able to deal with adversity with a level head. He also showed that his physicality and takedown defense can hold up for 15 minutes.
That’s good news facing Eric McConico, who has a solid grappling game. He picked up a couple of takedowns in his last fight and has three submissions to his name. The problem for McConico is that his chin hasn’t proved to be UFC level yet. While he has gritted out a pair of wins in the UFC, his two losses came in a combined 131 seconds. With Johnson hitting as hard as he does, it could be a quick night for McConico.
