MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 21

Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

Although Minnesota has been an above average team at the dish this year, we’ll happily ride Parker Messick in this one. The All-Star rookie gets his 20th start of the season. In that time, he’s logged 112.0 innings and put up a 2.73 ERA. He was last seen getting a three-up, three-down second inning for the American League in the All-Star Game, but prior to that he was cruising in July. He’s yet to allow more than a run in the month and has a 1.64 ERA to show for it.

While Minnesota has some bats to worry about, the Guardians do not. Cleveland enters the day in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. In addition, they are 29th in the league with just 4.01 runs per game. The only team worse than them at this stage of the year is the Toronto Blue Jays. They face Kendry Rojas on Tuesday. He may not be the top of the line starter we like to find in these plays, but he does have a 2.79 ERA on the year and more than a strikeout per inning. With as bad as Cleveland has been, he should be able to give us a clean first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 21: No (-135)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox had a rare NRFI let down for us on Monday when Payton Tolle gave up an awkward ground rule double to surrender a first inning run. That doesn’t mean they still aren’t one of our favorite teams to pick on for NRFI purposes.

One of the reasons why we love them on these plays is the tough pitching they’ve had. Ranger Suarez and his 3.15 ERA is back on the bump on Tuesday. He closed out Junes with a 2.10 ERA before heading to the IL with a groin injury. Now fully healed, he should be ready to take on an Orioles team that ranks in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs.

We also like the Red Sox because of their lack of hitting. Despite having a 14-game winning streak, they haven’t even cracked six runs per game in that span. Although that’s above average, it’s extremely low for this kind of streak. The streak also hasn’t helped them out of the first inning basement – they still rank dead last when it comes to scoring in the first. Kyle Bradish has been tough for the Orioles and should give us a shut door on this play.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 21: No (-135)
