MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 20

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

Once upon a time, it would have been nerve wrecking to put the Yankees in an NRFI play. However, their offense is falling off in a huge way. They have fallen all the way down to 10th in the majors in terms of run scoring. They’ve scored just five runs in the three games since the All-Star break and have scored more than five runs in a game just once since June 17th. Now they face Braxrton Ashcraft, who is sporting a 3.49 ERA and is 11th in the majors in strikeouts. He should cruise through this slumping lineup.

For the other half of the NRFI, we’ll have to deal with the Pirates – who have sneakily taken up the Yankees mantle in terms of their offensive production. That means we’ll have to rely on Ryan Weathers to get the job done for this play. Weathers has been hot recently. Over his last five starts, he’s allowed more than two earned runs just once – posting a 3.47 ERA in that stretch. If he stays hot, we should be able to get three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 20: No (-130)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox continue to be my favorite source for NRFI plays. There are two major reasons for it – the first being the amazing young pitching. Payton Tolle leads that crew as one of the very best. He’s coming off another solid start, making it three of his last four with one run or less. He’s also averaging 6.25 strikeouts per game in that span. With Baltimore in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring, Tolle should breeze through the top of the first.

The second reason we love Boston for NRFI spots is their hitting. Despite being on an incredible winning streak, their bats are still not overwhelming. They rank 23rd in the majors in run scoring and are still dead last in terms of first inning scoring. Even in a 13-game winning streak, they are averaging just 5.85 runs per game – good by most measures, but hardly for that kind of success. Now they’ll face Shane Baz, who has quietly put up a 4.19 ERA. He’s lowered that lately – holding opponents to three runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 20: No (-135)
