Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Vegas 119
UFC Bantamweight Fight: Karol Rosa vs Luana Santos
Start Time: Saturday (6/20) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
After last week, we’re back to having real prelims for a card. This weekend’s UFC Vegas 119 has an early fight between a couple of bantamweight veterans looking to find their footing in the division. Despite the stats making things look similar, there should be a pretty clear advantage in this one.
Karol Rosa has been alternating wins and losses in the UFC since 2021. She’s 5-4 in her last nine, but that doesn’t really tell the story of how good she is. That run includes fights against the women ranked #4, #5, and #6 in this division. Largely, Rosa was in all of those fights. Her main drawback is that she can beat a lot of these women with volume, but sometimes doesn’t land the most memorable strikes.
The good news for Rosa is that she likely has the most pop in this fight. Luana Santos has struggled to land much in the way of big shots in her UFC tenure. Despite a record that looks better than Rosa (5-1 in the UFC), she’s barely landed more strikes than her opponents – and definitely not much in the way of power. Also, her grappling faltered against a strong Casey O’Neill and that was down at flyweight.
At bantamweight, she’ll have issues with the strength of Rosa in the clinch. And if she can’t get Rosa down, look for Rosa to land far more en route to a decision victory.
