The early morning card is headlined by local favorite Song Yadong as he gets a chance to move forward in the bantamweight division against former champion, Deiveson Figueiredo. Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Macau
UFC Bantamweight Fight: Rei Tsuruya vs Luis Gurule
Start Time: Saturday (5/30) 4:00am EST (Paramount+)
Our selection for the prelims on Saturday is one where the books, and the public, may be putting too much emphasis on recent results. Rei Tsuruya is coming off a loss followed by a 14-month layoff. That might scare some people off. However, it’s worth noting that the loss was to current champion Joshua Van, who he managed to take down in every single round of their fight. That continued a solid run of outgrappling his opponents in nearly every fight.
On the other side, we have a recent victory for Luis Gurule. He picked up a win just 14 days prior to this fight when he knocked out Daniel Barez. Although that was a huge win for him, it was also his first win in the UFC. Over his previous three fights, he had went 0-3 and been outstruck significantly in each of those fights.
Those results have this line much closer than it has any business being. Tsuruya should have a massive wrestling advantage in this one. Gurule has just a 59% takedown defense in the UFC and has been taken down in nearly every fight. Add in that he has not had the time for a proper training camp for Tsuruya and we’ll likely see him struggle to defend the relentless attempts.
