While the UFC continues to be the king when it comes to MMA and gambling, there is more MMA than ever to bet on now. The advantage here is that the data is usually quite a bit less sharp than when you’re making MMA predictions for the UFC. MMA Regional Pick of the Week: PFL Belfast
PFL Bantamweight Fight: Sean Gauci vs Liam Gittins
Card Start Time: Thursday (4/16), 3:00pm EST (ESPN 2)
We enter a tough PFL bantamweight bout between fighters coming from two of the leading UFC feeder systems. Sean Gauci fought, and won, on Dana White’s Contender Series, but apparently didn’t bring enough action for the boss man. Liam Gittins won the Cage Warriors title, which is usually an immediate invite from the UFC, but instead he landed in PFL.
In terms of the stylistic matchup, I love the spot on Gauci here. He’s shown to be an absolute bulldog in fights. Whether it was his bout with Anthony Drilich, or any of his fights in HEX, he brings good forward pressure and a solid right hand. In addition, we’ve seen him deal with pressure before – being the first person to beat UFC title challenger Steven Erceg.
The problem for Gittins here is that he also likes to bring the pressure. He is a guy who has made a career out of wearing out his opponent. If he tries to bring that gameplan into Thursday, I expect it to go badly for him. Gauci should not only be more sharp on the feet, but also has plenty of cardio to hang.
