World Surf League Betting Pick: Degens Only Play of the Day

Being a degen is a core principle of our SGPN family. Well, what’s more degen than sweating out how many 180s will be thrown in a darts match? Or how many kills a player will get in Call of Duty? Allow us to introduce our Degens Only Play of the Day, a pick so obscure, it will have you friends questioning your sanity.

Every day, we scour the books and DFS sites for that one special play off the beaten path. Today, we turn our attention to the women’s division of the World Surf League as they take on the French Polynesian waves of Teahupoʻo, Tahiti.

This ride represents the finals of the Lexus Tahiti Pro event. It carries playoff implications heading into the Final 5 competition in Fiji later this month.

Molly Picklum Over Caitlin Simmers (+135 via ESPN BET)

Monday, August 11th, 12:30 p.m. ET

Simmers enters this matchup third in the overall rankings having accumulated 60,280 points so far this season. Her rise to the finals in Tahiti started by achieving top marks (12.84) in Heat 4 which earned her automatic advancement into the Heat 2 Quarterfinals. The American would go on to beat Aussie surfer Tyler Wright 15.60-9.83 for a trip to the semifinal round. It took 12 waves to decide who would compete for the trophy, but Simmers put together two solid runs good enough to come away with the 14.57-11.60 win.

Picklum currently sits atop the standings with 68,945 points, more than 4,000 points more than her second-place competitor. The Australian obliterated her competition in Heat 2 of this competition by putting up a 16.90 score, the highest total of any heat winner. From there, Picklum would go on to handle business against Vahiné Fierro, sending the French surfer home 13.10-9.67 and putting up a monster 9.77 ride in the process. She was tested in the semifinals, but was able to get past Caroline Marks 9.77-9.33 to get to the finals.

These two have faced off seven times in their careers with Simmers holding a 6-1 advantage in the head-to-head matchup. However, the most recent victory went to Picklum having sent Simmers home in the semifinals round of the Lexus Trestles Pro back in June. The Australian bested the American 16.37-10.84 on her way to the finals.

Good luck on this and all of your plays today. We’ll be back with another Degens Only Play of the Day tomorrow. While you’re here, check out some of my other contributions to the SGPN.
