MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 18
Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:35 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We return from the All-Star Break with our NRFI action and we’re starting off with a great line. We’ll have Baltimore coming to the plate to kick things off and they have been terrible in the first inning in the first half. They ranked 28th in first inning scoring with 0.35 runs per game. They’ll have to chase Taj Bradley to change that tune, which is easier said than done. Despite having less than desireable season-long stats, he does hold a 3.09 ERA in the month of July. Additionally, 50% of his June starts ended with him not allowing a run. Baltimore has gotten to him a couple of times, which probably leads to this being an underdog line. However, they didn’t once score in the first and I like the way Bradley’s stuff is trending.
The bottom of the inning should be even easier to get the NRFI to cash. Charlie Morton is throwing, which is another pitcher who doesn’t have pretty looking numbers. Despite the 5.18 ERA, he has been lights out as of late. In his last five starts (27.1 innings), he’s allowed just seven total earned runs – which comes out to a 2.30 ERA. Additionally, in his one run in with the Rays earlier this year, he mowed them over. He threw 6.0 innings in that game and allowed just one earned run. He was also dialed in with seven strikeouts and just a single walk. If he brings that version of himself, this NRFI should cash easy.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 18: No (+115)
Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first in this one brings a set of bats that are much more feared than what we were working with in our first selection. The Tigers are admittedly one of the very best hitting teams in the majors, but we’ll rely on another pitcher that is outperforming expectations recently. Patrick Corbin was the butt end of a lot of jokes coming into this season, but he has settled in nicely. In his two July starts, he’s sporting a 3.27 ERA. More importantly, for our purposes at least, he’s been lights out in the first. It’s been over a month since he allowed a run in the first inning, with the last one coming on June 12th. We’ll look for him to continue that magic for us.
The Rangers ge their hacks in the bottom of the inning, and their bats aren’t to be feared. They currenly rank 24th in runs per game with just 4.05. They’re also a below average team when it comes to scoring in the fitst inning. In order to buck that, they’ll have to figure out Reese Olson, who has been stellar this year. Since returning from injury, he has a 2.89 ERA – which is actually a whisker lower than his 2.95 ERA on the year. His strikeout stuff is also looking up with 10 strikeouts over his last 9.1 innings. He should be able to pick up some swing and misses and get this thing to cash for us.
