Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 318
UFC Flyweight Fight: Carli Judice vs Nicolle Caliari
Start Time: Saturday (7/19) 6:00pm EST (ESPN+)
For my favorite play on the undercard this weekend, I’m rolling with Carli Judice. A lot of people wrote off Judice following back-to-back losses on Dana White’s Contender Series and in her UFC debut. However, she showed in her sophomore effort, that it was a mistake.
She looked incredible last time out against Yuneisy Duben. Despite facing a power puncher coming off a knockout of the year candidate, she got right in her face and picked her apart. She launched a head kick to pick up a performance bonus and got herself booked on a hometown card for this one.
While part of this pick is the confidence that I have in Judice, some of it is that I also like the stylistic matchup of this one. Caliari is a submission specialist, who couldn’t really get much going on the ground last time out. She hit just 3-of-14 takedowns and only managed just over three minutes of control time. Every second on the feet is going to be dangerous for her and I don’t think she’ll get enough on the ground.
