As I mentioned in my best bet article, the MLB Home Run Derby is looking more and more like the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, with the superstars of the game sitting it out and young talent taking their place instead.
James Wood certainly fits the bill of a young talent. The 22-year-old uber-prospect is having a breakout sophomore season in the majors with the Washington Nationals, making the All-Star Game and compiling the second-highest WAR in the National League for a position player.
But it’s the homers we’re interested in here – he’s hit 24 dingers already this season. More importantly, he’s got the highest average distance for his home runs this season, with those 24 homers going an average of 411 feet.
