The main event sees the vacant lightweight title on the line between former champs Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira. Plus, Alexandre Pantoja defends his belt against Kai Kara-France. Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 317
UFC Flyweight Fight: Tracy Cortez vs Viviane Araujo
Start Time: Saturday (6/28) 6:30pm EST (ESPN+)
My favorite spot on the prelims is the bounceback fight for Tracy Cortez. She is, of course, coming off of that loss to Rose Namajunas and the fight wasn’t all that competitive. Even though we’re still laying some juice on this one, I think we are still buying low on Cortez.
There were two main reasons why she struggled in that fight. The first is that she took it on short notice and was preparing for someone very different – wrestler Miranda Maverick. The other issue is that she faced a style that will likely be her hardest test, a rangey striker who can defend takedowns and play the point game.
On Saturday, she’s facing neither of those problems. She’s put a full camp in for Araujo and is ready for the style she brings. Araujo is going to be shooting those takedowns and I think the physicality of Cortez plays up in this one.
