MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 20
Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago Cubs
First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Friday’s matinee is our first look for an NRFI. The Mariners get first hacks in this one and they have had some issues with their bats as of late. In the series with Boston, they only managed nine total runs (3.00 per game). What’s worse about that is that eight of those came in one game, leaving them with just one and zero, respectively, in the other two games. They’ve got another tough assignment in Matthew Boyd, who enters action with a 2.79 ERA. Over his last four starts, he’s only allowed four earned runs – for an ERA of 1.42 in that span.
The bottom of the first should be much more of a sweat. On one hand, the Cubs have been hammering the ball this season. They rank 2nd in runs per game. However, those numbers have taken a nose dive as of late. They’ve managed just 18 runs over their last five games (or 3.6 runs per game). That number would put them in 27th place in the majors currently in that category. George Kirby will be in charge of keeping that trend going. Despite his rocky start, Kirby has settled in nicely. He’s allowed just two earned runs in each of his last three starts – good for a 3.17 ERA in that span.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 20: No (TBD)
Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first should be the easiest half inning we have on Friday. Max Fried is on the bump again for the Yankees. He’s quickly made himself one of the top choices for AL Cy Young this season. With a 1.89 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 95.0 innings, I’d take him to mow down just about anyone for an inning. That’s especially true when the team trying to put up runs is the Orioles. Baltimore has been miserable this year, scoring just 4.01 runs per game, which puts them in 24th place in the majors. They are even worse in the first inning, where they rank 26th.
We’re taking a bit of a risk here going with the top scoring team in the majors for an NRFI, but they haven’t exactly been themselves lately. They exploded for seven runs last game which brings them all the way up to 14 in their last eight games. That comes out to 1.75 runs per game in the last week or so. They’ll face Tomoyuki Sugano in this one. In 14 outings on the year, he’s held opponents to three or less runs in 13 of them. All of that has helped him earn a 3.38 ERA and makes him a candidate to keep the Yankees quiet yet again.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 20: No (TBD)
