MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 19
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV
These two teams will play a double header one Thursday, but it’s the early game we’re targeting for the NRFI. That starts in the top of the first when AL Cy Yound frontrunner Tarik Skubal is on the bump. He’s rocking a 1.99 ERA with 111 strikeouts in just 90.1 innings. Not only has he been mowing people over, but he just so happens to be facing a team in Piuttsburgh who hasn’t been hitting the ball all that well. They rank 28th in first inning scoring with just 0.38 first inning runs per game. They’re also in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring runs.
The bottom of the inning should be a bit more of a sweat in this one. Firstly, the Tigers are one of the better hitting teams in the American League. However, we’re going to put our trust in Andrew Heaney, who has been solid for the Pirates this season. He comes into Thursday’s action with a 3.33 ERA and has been even better lately. He’s allowed just six earned runs in his last three starts combined, which comes out to a 3.06 ERA in that span. We’ve also seen an uptick in his strikeout numbers, which should help him through the first inning in this one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 19: No (-155)
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
This NRFI bid is another front end of a double header. The Cardinals get first hacks in this one and they’ve been terrible in the early part of the game. Their recent streak of ugly first innings has dropped them into dead last in first inning scoring. They’re averaging just 0.32 first inning runs per game. However, this isn’t just a fade of the Cardinals’ bats – I also really like the arm of Sean Burke. The surface stats aren’t that good for the rookie, but that’s just due to a couple rough outings. If you ignore his last start, which was one of those rough ones, he is on a three-game run with just five earned runs in 19.0 innings. IF that version of him shows up, he should waltz right out of the first inning.
The bottom of the inning sees the White Sox get their swings in. They have been far from a good hitting team either. They rank 28th in the league in run scoring with just 3.42 per game. That shouldn’t get any easier with Erick Fedde on the hill. The Cardinals starter hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a start in a month. Additionally, he’s held opponents to just three earned runs in his last two starts – putting up a 2.53 ERA in that span.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 19: No (-120)
