MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 4

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top half of the first inning here, Walker Buehler looks to keep the Fenway faithful happy with a zero. His numbers in the first game don’t really inspire confidence. However, apart from the first inning 2-run double, he was pretty sharp early on. In fact, he did not give up another run into we got into the fifth inning of that game. Meanwhile, the Cardinals haven’t been all that hot early in the game. They have scored just one first inning run over the last three games. It might be a big swing from his first game, but I like Buehler to get us out of this one.

While we’re worried about the offense of St. Louis a bit, the Red Sox bats don’t make me sweat. They are one of six teams in MLB that haven’t managed to put up a first inning run yet. A hot Erick Fedde shouldn’t help matters for them. He threw six innings against the Twins in his season debut and only allowed one earned run. Even if the Sox were to get to him here, I can’t imagine it being early on.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 4: No (-110)

Cleveland Guardians vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

While the Red Sox have been downright futile when it comes to the first inning runs, the Guardians aren’t that far behind. They’ve just scored one run in the first inning this year up to this point. They haven’t been that good overall at this point either, with their runs placing them in the bottom third of the league. If Jose Soriano looks like he did in his season debut, he should cruise easily. He threw 7.0 innings in his first game and allowed just four base runners without a single run.

It’ll be Guardians’ Gavin Williams who looks to close this NRFI out on Friday. he wasn’t quite as good as Jose Soriano in his debut, but did manage to put a quality start on a tough Royals lineup. Now he’ll face this Guardians squad, who is putting up similar numbers to Kansas City without the same deep fire power on the team. While Williams will likely give up some runs here, I think they’ll keep it quiet early.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 4: No (+100)
