Big Dogs
In the early weeks, you can only take so much from the top dogs in action because they are usually matched up against very week teams. Every team in the top 10 had a very easy matchup outside of Georgia and Notre Dame. (Maybe just Notre Dame).
The Irish had a very impressive week one win in a hostile College Station. Without a doubt, they were the better team from the get-go but winning a football game in that stadium is never an easy task. Notre Dame controls their own destiny and can really taste that five seed after holding off Texas A&M. Below, we will take a look at a few more favorites and keep an eye on the outsiders for the Week 2 College Football Playoff Picture.

Week 2 College Football Playoff Pictur
The Favorites
Alabama
Although the Tide had a walkover game against Western Kentucky, we have to be pleased with what we saw. Quarterback Jalen Milroe started his Heisman campaign with a bang and looked very comfortable in the new Kalen DeBoer Crimson Tide Offense. Sure, there were a few bumps to start the game, but that should happen with everything new from last year. Overall, Alabama looked very solid, fluid, and calm. They are poised for a top seed if they can get by Georgia.
Oregon
The Ducks came into their week one matchup against Idaho as the third-ranked team in the AP Poll. In short, they did not look like the third-ranked team in the AP Poll. Is Idaho a feisty FCS team? Sure… That is no excuse for what we saw from the ducks. Game in and game out, Dan Lanning has this offense flying up and down the field and scoring at will. Dillon Gabriel and Co. did not show that at all. It was only one week, but The Ducks will not survive this Big Ten schedule if they come out like that.
ohio state
The new look Buckeyes had a very solid week one. Transfer Quarterback Will Howard got off to a slow start in this game until he flipped a switch and started to trust his arm. Hopefully for Ohio State fans, this was just a week-one thing and not a regular thing. Not trusting the arm out the gates is a recipe for failure once they get into The Big Ten schedule. The real story with Ohio State was the emergence of freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. He looked the part as the top wide receiver recruit in the nation with a 6 reception, 92 yard, and two touchdown stat line in his first game as a Buckeye. As always, the defense looked very solid, and they were surely the best team in the Big Ten in week one.

Michigan
The Wolverines had a lot of questions heading into the season after losing a ton of production plus Coach Harbaugh. A 30-10 week one win against Fresno State looks alright on paper, but this was a six point game with just under six minutes to play. As the defending National Champions, that is surely unacceptable. The Wolverines have QB questions as they rotated between Davis Warren and Alex Orji. It was pretty clear that Warren was the clear passing option and Orji was in in running situations.
It won’t be that obvious going forward (at least I hope so!), but one of the two needs to step up and be the clear number one option. I never believed in Donovan Edwards as the clear number one back and I do not think the coaching staff does either. Edwards rushed for just 27 yards on 11 carries. If you are trying to be “the guy” in the Michigan backfield, you cannot post that stat line. It was not a great week one for Michigan, but we can not count them out in The Week 2 Playoff Picture just yet.
The outsiders
USC
I was so high on The Trojans coming into the season and they showed out in Vegas. Truly, I do not believe Miller Moss is too much of a downgrade from Caleb Williams in this years version of College Football. Add in the new look physical defense, and you get a really competitive USC team. The problem with them for years has been the tackling. It was not fully solved, but they looked far better in week one and the defense was a massive part of defeating LSU.

Oklahoma State
All the buzz heading into the week was around how The Pokes would struggle with FCS Powerhouse South Dakota State. All they did was shut up the haters and roll by a very solid football team in South Dakota State. All-world running back Ollie Gordon posted yet another 100 yard rushing game and tallied two scores on the ground as well. He proved why he is one of the best running backs in the nation and has the makings to lead this team to glory. Look out for The Pokes these next few weeks.
Miami
On a yearly basis, Miami comes into the season with high hopes and usually disappoints. I am not going to come here and tout a Miami future but the canes play really well in week one in The Swamp. With Florida State looking shaky in Ireland and Clemson getting rolled by Georgia, someone has to take the top spot in The ACC. The Canes are led by transfer QB Cam Ward and he had a great start to his career for Miami. By no means is Florida a world-beating program. Anytime you are winning on the road to an in-state rival SEC school is massive in week one. Look for Miami to climb the rankings heading into week two.
