PLL: Premier Lacrosse League Picks and Best Bets for Week 8

Carolina Chaos (-1.5) vs California Redwoods (+1.5)

The Redwoods will begin their homestand on Saturday, July 29th at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. They scored a huge win two games ago in Week 5 against the Boston Cannons but turned around last week and lost by seven to the Archers of Utah. The Redwoods are now just 1-4 on the season and worst in the Western Conference.

The Chaos took down the Whipsnakes in Week 7, but it wasn’t easy. It was a close-fought defensive game, and Chaos goalie Blaze Riorden moved into the top 10 on the all-time saves list. After making 18 saves in the night, he catapulted himself to ninth all-time. The Chaos came out ahead in overtime when rookie Shane Knobloch put in the winning goal. They move to 2-3 on the season.

I’d expect this one to be a lower-scoring affair, so the under could be the best play in this game. Yes, the Redwoods showed up a few weeks ago for that game against the Cannons, but outside of that, they can’t be trusted. Give me Chaos.

Pick: Chaos -1.5 (-140)

Denver Outlaws (+1.5) vs Boston Cannons (-1.5)

The Outlaws were down two at the half to the Waterdogs in Week 7 but quickly stormed back with eight points in the third quarter to grab the lead and hold on to the two-point victory. Dalton Young and Graham Buddy Jer. led the team in scoring with five points, while rookie Brennan O’Neill added four points of his own. The Outlaws move to 3-2 on the season.

The Cannons pulled off the upset over the New York Atlas in Week 7 with an impressive 17-12 win over the top team in the league. They were led in scoring by Marcus Holman with five points and Jeff Trainor with four. That win vaults the Cannons into a tie with the Atlas for first place in the Eastern Conference.

This is a tough one to pick. The Outlaws play up to their competition at times and completely let you down at other times. The Cannons can get up and beat the Atlas but also lose to the Redwoods. This might be a good spot for the Outlaws to catch the Cannons being cocky. I think they’ll keep it close.

Pick: Outlaws +1.5 (+100)

Philadelphia Waterdogs (+2.5) vs New York Atlas (-2.5)

The Waterdogs suffered yet another loss in Week 7 as the Denver Outlaws took them down. Philadelphia had the lead at halftime but gave up eight points in the third quarter. The Waterdogs fall to 1-5 on the season, a tough season continuing for first-year head coach Bill Tierney. Now they have to play the 5-2 Atlas coming off a loss.

The Atlas lost to the Boston Cannons in Week 7, just their second loss of the season. The Cannons now tied the Atlas for the top spot in the East, but the Atlas still holds the tiebreaker. A loss by the Atlas is bad news for the Waterdogs.

The last time New York lost in Week 4 to Maryland, they came back in Week 5 with a vengeance on their mind and whopped the Outlaws 17-4.

This is the perfect bounce-back spot for New York. After suffering a loss to the Cannons last week, expect them to do as they did to the Outlaws in Week 5.

Pick: Atlas -2.5 (+210)

Maryland Whipsnakes (-1.5) vs California Redwoods (+1.5)

The Whipsnakes lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Chaos in Week 7. Levi Anderson absolutely bullied his way to the game-tying score in regulation before rookie Shane Knobloch broke their hearts. The Whipsnakes fall to just 3-2 on the season.

This will be the Redwoods’ second game on their homestand. You’d like to think they at least get one of these games, but they are playing two tough teams, and I think they may go winless this homecoming.

Pick: Whipsnakes -1.5 (-130)
