MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 12
Washington Nationals vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – NESN
We rode these two teams yesterday to an NRFI and I like this matchup again. Obviously all the same offensive factors are reasons to get in on it. The Nationals are a below average offense and the worst team in the league at scoring in the first inning. The Red Sox are basically middle of the pack in both of those, but haven’t scored in the first inning in a week.
What does change is the pitching mathcup. However, I like both of Sunday’s starters. Brayan Bello retruns from the 15-day IL Sunday, but he was sharp before he went down with his lat strain. He had allowed just three earned runs over his last 16.2 innings pitched.
On the other side, MacKenzie Gore has been good for the Nationals. He’s allowed three or fewer earned runs in all of his seven starts this year. That includes holding the Dodgers to just one run (a solo home run) over six innings a couple weeks ago.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 12: No (-140)
Oakland Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – MLB TV
We just covered Washington who is dead last in first inning runs in the majors, and now we have Oakland who is a close second. While their offense has been better than last year, they’re still 22nd in runs and are scoring just 3.28 runs per game away from home. They’ll face Luis Castillo, who has settled in nicely. He has two scoreless starts in his last five outing and no more than two earned given up in any of those.
On the other side, the Mariners offense is arguably worse than Oakland. They’re 26th in runs scored and fare worse at home than they do on the road. On top of that, they’re just one spot above Oakland in first inning runs (28th in the majors). They’ll face Alex Wood, who might not be a name that inspires confidence in 2024, but he’s only allowed three earned over his last three starts (15.2 innings).
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 12: No (-140)
