MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 1
Miami Marlins vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kaufman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Marlins are first to the plate in this one and they’ve been a team to fade when it comes to their offense. They rank in the bottom third of the league in runs per game and are even worse when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They rank 25th in the league in that category and have been ice cold early on lately too. Now they face Randy Dobnak, who has been a revelation for the Royals this year. He just cracked the 50 innings mark in his last start and is still sporting a 1.92 ERA on the year. He’s held two of his last three opponents scoreless and this feels like it could be another good spot for him.
In the bottom of the first we get another good lineup to fade. The Royals are one of the few teams that have scored less runs on the year than the Royals. Additionally, they don’t have a great matchup either with Tyler Phillips on the bump. He’s allowed just one run in three of his last four starts. That helped to lower his season ERA down to 3.59. Additionally, we’ve seen a sharp uptick in his strikeout stuff, which should help us close the door on a clean first frame.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (TBD)
New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
At one point in time, the Yankees were a team that would strike fear into an NRFI bettor’s heart. However, they’re nothing more than a league average offense that struggles in the early parts of the game. They are 24th in first inning scoring and it’s been the better part of a week since they’ve scored in the first. That’s music to the ears of Grayson Rodriguez, who toes the rubber for the Angels on Tuesday. While his season numbers don’t instill confidence, he put up a 2.93 ERA over five starts in August. He also struck out better than a batter per inning.
We close out this NRFI with the Angels at the plate. They rank 27th in the majors in run scored and are riding a seven-game losing streak. During that span, they have scored just 21 total runs, or 3.00 runs per game. Some of those also came in extra innings, so the regulation numbers look even worse. That’s not a trend you want to be running when Gerrit Cole comes to town with his 3.19 ERA slung over his shoulder. He’s really found his stride lately and shouldn’t break a sweat in this first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (TBD)
