The PGA Tour is headed to South Carolina for the 2022 CJ Cup this week for what should be an excellent event. This limited-field, no-cut event has drawn commitments from some of the top players in the world. As we have seen, some swing season events have lacked start power but that is not the case this week.

The CJ Cup has done its fair share of bouncing around different venues. Originally hosted at Nine Bridges in South Korea, COVID has turned the event into a tour of Tom Fazio designs. The last two CJ Cups were held at Shadow Creek and The Summit Club in Las Vegas. This week, however, the CJ Cup will be played at The Congaree Golf Club. Although this course has never hosted a CJ Cup, it was home to the Palmetto Championship in 2021.

We are seeing the biggest stars in golf tee it up this week. Rory Mcllroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, and Matt Fitzpatrick all make their PGA Tour season debut. Given the elite field and a firm and fast golf course, this will be the most exciting PGA Tour event of the swing season.

Congaree Golf Club is a 7,600-yard par 71 with Bermuda grass greens. This course certainly has some length to it and we saw that play into fruition in 2021. Bombers dominated the top of the leaderboard at the 2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree.

In addition, -11 was enough to win at Congaree in 2021. I don’t think that will be far off from the winning score this week. I expect something in the 13-16 under range to take this home.

Let’s get into my favorite DFS plays at the 2022 CJ Cup!

2022 CJ Cup DFS: Best Plays in Each Price Range

2022 CJ Cup DFS – $10,000+ Range

Rory McIlroy $11,100

When you pay up for things, it is usually a superior product. Rory McIlroy is the best golfer in the world and is worth the hefty price tag this week. The 4-time major winner has had quite the 2022 season. He finished Top 10 in every major, amassed three wins, and was the most consistent golfer on the PGA Tour.

Rory absolutely dominates Tom Fazio designs. He is a three-time winner at Quail Hollow with 5 other Top 10 finishes. And he won the Tom Fazio designed Summit Club last year. Rory dominates these layouts because he hits it so long and straight. This week will be no different.

His only blemish since last April was a missed cut at the FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Other than that, Rory hasn’t finished outside the Top 20 in any event he’s player. Rory has a really high floor. He is a must-play in DFS this week at the 2022 CJ Cup.

2022 CJ Cup DFS – $9,000 Range

Matt Fitzpatrick $9,800

There are certain golfers that you play in certain situations. And it is always a profitable to roster Matt Fitzpatrick on long and difficult golf courses. When your only win in the United States is at the U.S Open, there is really no denying where he excels.

Over the past 50 rounds, Fitzpatrick ranks 8th in Strokes Gained – Off-the-Tee, 17th in Strokes Gained – Around-the-Green, and 1st in Bogey Avoidance. These are the most important statistics to look at this week. In addition, Bermuda is by far his best putting surface. I trust him to grind out a Top 10 with the way it’s going to play.

There are very few players in the field who have prior experience at Congaree. The fact he finished Top 10 at this course in 2021 only strengthens his case. Expect another good finish from Fitzpatrick at Congaree this week. Play him in your 2022 CJ Cup DFS lineups.

2022 CJ Cup DFS – $8,000 Range

Shane Lowry $8,300

Another golfer that excels in difficult scoring conditions is Shane Lowry. Fresh off a win at the BMW Championship on the DP World Tour, Lowry has found some form after a stellar 2022 season.

Lowry consistently excels in more difficult scoring conditions, is an excellent Bermuda putter, and is really mispriced in DFS. Lowry ranks 6th in this field in Strokes Gained – Approach, 19th in Ball-Striking, and 6th in total DFS points. It’s also troubling that raw, unproven players like Taylor Montgomery and Sahith Theegala are a similar price to a steady, reliable major winner like Shane Lowry.

Lowry’s best finishes in 2022 were on Bermuda greens. He also is excellent around-the-green. If he can keep his driver in play, he can excel for your DFS lineups at the 2022 CJ Cup.

2022 CJ Cup DFS – $7,000 Range

Russell Henley $7,300

I will almost never play Russell Henley when he’s priced more than $9,000. But at $7,300, I will take a shot on him at the 2022 CJ Cup. Like other golfers who are featured in this column, Henley excels in difficult scoring conditions due to his prolific ball striking. Russell Henley ranks 1st in this field in Strokes Gained – Approach and 12th in Strokes Gained – Ball-Striking over his last 50 rounds. That’s a great combination for Congaree.

In addition, Henley raises his baseline putting statistics on Bermuda greens. And while his recent form hasn’t been great, this is the week he can turn things around. Play Russell Henley in your DFS lineups at the 2022 CJ Cup.

2022 CJ Cup DFS – $6,000 Range

Lee Hodges $6,300

This is just another blatant misprice. Lee Hodges was one of my favorite plays last week, and he more than paid off his price at the 2022 ZOZO Championship. So for all the reasons I liked him last week, I like him even more with a $400 cheaper price tag.

Over the past 24 rounds, Lee ranks 13th in Strokes Gained – Approach and 12th in Strokes Gained – Short Game. He is back on track after a missed cut at the Shriners. And he now has made 6 of his last 8 cuts on the PGA Tour with two Top 20 finishes.

Because we’re playing Rory up top, we need some cheaper options down below. Lee is the key to a great DFS lineup at the 2022 CJ Cup.

Optimal Lineup

  1. Rory McIlroy – $11,100
  2. Matt Fitzpatrick – $9,800
  3. Shane Lowry – $8,300
  4. Russell Henley – $7,300
  5. Scott Stallings – $7,200
  6. Lee Hodges – $6,300
