Friday Night College Football Preview: Every Game Listed From Best To Worst

After a nice slate of Thursday night games to open up the season, day two of College Football on Friday, August 30th should really up the dosage of quality games.

WISCONSIN @ SOUTH FLORIDA

This game should be a good one. Wisconsin has a Heisman candidate in Jonathan Taylor but they are also replacing a lot of the offensive line and starting a freshman QB who’s never played a game. South Florida enters year 3 in the Charlie Strong era and this is his most experienced team yet. Former Alabama QB and sixth senior Blake Barnett will be the QB for the Bulls come Friday night. The temperature in Tampa could also play a difference as the game hits the 2nd half.

UTAH STATE @ WAKE FOREST

Matt Wells may be at Texas Tech now but Utah State should still put up a ton of points under new but yet old head coach Gary Anderson. The offense has an elite QB who’s on the NFL radar in Jordan Love. Wake Forest returns both their stud freshman QB’s in Jamie Newman and Sam Hartman. Newman is getting the start but i wouldn’t be surprised if both get some time. This is a big one for both teams.

OKLAHOMA STATE @ OREGON STATE

The Cowboys in Corvallis? This should be a fun one to watch if you like scoring and great running back play.

Jonathan Smith exceeded my expectations last season for Oregon State and now he gets a bunch of transfers to mix in with senior QB Jake Luton. The running backs are who to watch here as Jermar Jefferson for Oregon State and Chuba Hubbard for Oklahoma State. It’s unclear whether it’s going to be Spencer Sanders or Dru Brown starting at QB for the Cowboys but both should put up big numbers regardless.

COLORADO STATE @ COLORADO

Last year Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo was fighting for health all of August so perhaps the score was misleading when Colorado took care of Colorado State. Now, Bobo is back and perhaps his team is too. The Buffs have Heisman candidate Lavishka Shenault but have to break in a new head coach, former Georgia DC Mel Tucker. Colin Hill and Steven Montez are both good QBs for their respective teams. This rivalry game is normally always fun.

PURDUE @ NEVADA

Nevada lost their starting QB to a broken hand on August 3rd and now must trust the depth of the team. Nevada runs the air raid so I’m assuming the backup can’t be that bad. Purdue had a great offseason when they retained Jeff Brohm. Elijah Sindelar spent some time at QB of the Boilermakers last year and now he gets all the control after David Blough graduated. Rondale Moore is one of the most exciting players in the country. Expect a large dosage of Moore in Reno.

TULSA @ MICHIGAN STATE

Michigan State returns basically their entire roster and don’t look now but no one is talking much about the Spartans and I’m sure thats the way Mark Dantonio prefers it. The Spartans are notorious for not covering the opening game and Tulsa was a much better team than their record indicated last year. The Golden Hurricane also welcome in Baylor transfer Zach Smith at QB.

UMASS @ RUTGERS

Chris Ash is on the hot seat I think everyone knows that. Which means this is a must win game for Ash and the Scarlet Knights. Last season their starting QB Arthur Sitkowski had just 4 passing TD’s to 18 Int’s. He’s back along with Texas Tech grad transfer McLean Carter. Umass is breaking in a new coach in Walt Bell the former offensive coordinator at Florida State.

RICE @ ARMY

Kelvin Hopkins the Army Black Knights Heisman candidate and the triple option host the Rice Owls and 2nd year head coach Mike Bloomgren the former Stanford offensive coordinator. Year two in Houston for Bloomgren means more physicality and familiarity with his system. Meanwhile, in West Point head coach Jeff Monken is doing one of the best coaching jobs in all of college football. Army fans are thinking another double digit win season is in store for the Black Knights.
