College Football Week 9 Preview & Picks Recap
The College Football Experience on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its College Football Week 9 preview and picks as Colby Dant (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) bring in CJ Sullivan (@CJSullivan_) for the final weekend of October. Does anyone trust Sam Houston after Phil Longo’s firing? Is Georgia Southern minus 5.5 against App State really the best bet of the week?
Can Iowa lay 3.5 against Wisconsin? Is Nevada plus 22.5 at UCLA live for a first half money line? Does USC catching 6.5 against Ohio State keep Lincoln Riley in LA? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.
Sam Houston Finally Moves On From Phil Longo
Sam Houston State fired Phil Longo before a single game hit the board, and nobody on the panel sounded sad about it. The record they cited was 2-18. CJ Sullivan admitted the crew talked the Bet Detective into one more live Sam Houston bet last week. The latest effort was somehow the worst of them all. So the Tuesday night Sam Houston era is done. Ryan McIntyre wants a defensive coach next, because the Longo teams kept drawing penalties after the play was over. Mac also likes Skyler Cassidy, now at Oklahoma State, for the job. Meanwhile the schedule brings a trip to Jacksonville State next week, which already looks like a sleepy spot.
The Early College Football Week 9 Picks
Troy at JMU kicked things off on Thursday night. It is a rematch of last year’s Sun Belt Championship, with 20.5 points on the line. CJ Sullivan and Ryan McIntyre both took the Dukes, and the Bet Detective locked it. The case is easy to follow. Troy threw for about 48 yards last week and 140 the week before, so where does the offense come from against JMU? Mac called it 38-10. Next came Tulane at Charlotte, with Tulane laying 10.5 and the total at 46.5. Colby Dant and Mac had already bet Charlotte on both money lines and the points. By showtime the line was down to 7.5, so the market is moving their way.
Kent State laying 9.5 on the road after winning the Wagon Wheel drew the loudest reaction of the early window. The Bet Detective went straight to Sac State, and Colby Dant brought the numbers to back it. Kent State ranks 137th in the country on offense, while Sac State sits at 132nd. Defensively it is 84th against 85th. Then add a flight two time zones west for Kent State. That made it a triple lock on the Hornets, with the money line and the 9.5 both in play. Harvard at Dartmouth is a Friday game on ESPNU, and the guys also stacked a triple lock on Dartmouth catching 10.5 in Hanover.
Coach Bump Spots In Raleigh And College Park
Cal at NC State might be the cleanest spot on the whole slate. NC State fired Dave Doeren, so the interim coach gets the one-game bump at Carter-Finley. Cal, meanwhile, got boat raced 42-0 in the second half at SMU. Then the team flew all the way home before heading back east to Raleigh. Mac framed it as a 9 AM game for Cal. The Bet Detective called it the definition of a cross-country coach bump and circled it as a contest play. Colby Dant joined too, which made it a triple lock. That is also why NC State minus 6.5 ended up first on the Mac in the Box card.
Maryland works the same angle. Mike Locksley was finally fired, and the interim catches 2.5 at home against Illinois. Bret Bielema’s team just stormed the field, so the guys love a letdown spot with a coach bump on the other side. The one hesitation Colby Dant raised was personal, since Bielema’s father passed away in recent days, and the show sent condolences. Still, it became a triple lock on the Terps. Syracuse plus 10.5 against SMU went one step further. The producer had also given out the Syracuse money line on another show the night before. So it turned into a quadruple lock, with the money line showing plus 300.
Iowa, Wisconsin And The Battles That Split The Room
Wisconsin and Iowa produced the longest argument of the night. Colby Dant and Mac locked Iowa minus 3.5, and Mac called it 17-3. The case runs through the stat sheet. Iowa’s offense ranks 69th, which is high by Iowa’s standards over the past 15 years. Wisconsin, meanwhile, ranks 112th throwing the ball, and its best unit is the run game at 77th. But CJ Sullivan battled them on the Badgers anyway, because this looks like a field goal game between two equal rosters. The producer also chimed in at the end with a play of his own on the board: the under 36.5.
Arizona at Texas Tech split the room too. Colby Dant went in on the Arizona money line and Mac followed, partly because Tech owns the 126th-ranked pass defense. The Bet Detective took Tech and pictured a 27-20 cover. UAB at South Florida went the same way, with UAB plus 9.5 on one side and a USF lock in a 24-10 kind of game on the other. Then Florida and Georgia moved inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which nobody liked. The Gators plus 12.5 still got a light lock, while Mac rode Georgia off the loss. Finally USC plus 6.5 against Ohio State put Mac on the Trojans and the Bet Detective on the Buckeyes.
The Underdogs Worth Backing
FIU plus 13.5 at Liberty is the Bet Detective’s dirty dog, and the first half money line is the bet. Mac had it circled as well. FIU lost outright last week as a 10-point favorite. Before that, it went play for play with Jacksonville State. Willie Simmons is also a really good coach as a dog, so two touchdowns feels like far too many. Northwestern plus 3.5 at Oregon drew a triple lock next, because the guys think Oregon has quit after falling out of the playoff race. Then Kansas plus 6.5 against TCU earned a double lock, with the money line at plus 180 also in play.
Arkansas plus 9.5 against Missouri is one of CJ Sullivan’s favorite spots. The first half money line at plus 190 is in play too, because Arkansas has improved for three straight weeks. So that became a triple lock. Nevada plus 22.5 at UCLA got the same treatment, with the first half money line quoted at 8 to 1. San Jose State plus 15.5 against New Mexico is another, since a 42.5 total leaves New Mexico a tiny needle to thread. Mac also called North Carolina plus 14.5 against Miami the favorite play on the board. Then Iowa State plus 8.5 against Oklahoma State closed the dog run as a Halloween triple lock.
The Mac In The Box Card And The Top Seven
The Mac in the Box contest card holds a comfortable lead over Team Izzy, and this week it goes seven deep. NC State minus 6.5 leads it, followed by FIU plus 13.5 against Liberty. Boise State made it too, since the Bet Detective expects Boise to score every time it has the ball against Texas State as an 11.5-point favorite. Arkansas and Iowa State ride as dogs. Maryland is the coach bump against Illinois, and Georgia State rounds it out. That gives them three favorites, three big dogs and a near pick’em dog. Five and two is the standard, but they want six and one or seven and oh.
Colby Dant also ranked a personal top seven, and number one is Georgia Southern minus 5.5 against App State in the Deeper Than Hate rivalry. The matchup is the argument. App State’s pass defense ranks 104th, and Georgia Southern owns a top-25 passing attack. But Mac and the Bet Detective both took App State, so the rivalry gets a battle too. Boise State sits second on the list, then Iowa, Boston College, South Alabama, Nevada and San Jose State. Syracuse is an eighth if you want one, and Georgia State a ninth. The two Georgia schools even got pitched together as a little two-step parlay.
