Our Picks

Ryan opened on Atlanta’s spot. The Falcons come in off a Thursday night game with a little extra rest, though it’s their second straight road trip, and he put the jump at quarterback down to the plain difference between a backup and a starter. The young starter was fine, in Ryan’s words, and should stay fine as long as the run game works and play action moves the offense. He expects Atlanta to run on a Saints defense he cited as 32nd in rush DVOA.

Sean said Ryan had missed the biggest bullet point. The game sits on Monday night to mark 20 years since the Katrina game and the blocked punt, and he expects the Superdome to be bonkers. He loves fading this Falcons team off a huge win over the Packers, cited Kevin Stefanski at 15-26 against the spread off a win, and noted that the young quarterback has won back-to-back games only once as a starter, small sample and all. Sean even wondered whether the Saints got sloppy in their last game because they were already looking ahead to this one, which he called their Super Bowl. His verdict was a home smash.

Ryan didn’t budge. New Orleans has covered only 39 of 89 home games since 2016, he said, and the city has moved on to the drama around LSU. Sean’s answer to Bijan against the 32nd-ranked run defense was effort: the Saints had their last game in hand and fumbled it away, so he expects an extremely motivated team. Ryan came back with a young Atlanta team building confidence now that its starter is back, and went as far as calling the Falcons a potential lock. “That’s a bad lock,” Sean said.

The last word from Sean was about the noise. He pointed to a Falcons lineman who had made one start and told Ryan, “When the false starts start coming for the Falcons, don’t say I didn’t try and warn you.” Ryan’s fix is to score quick and take the crowd out of it, and he floated a Bijan first-quarter prop that he’s saving for the Monday night props show. Sean called him a madman for going against the city of New Orleans on the Katrina anniversary.
