Ann Arbor has been located at the top of the College Football news pages for a full week now. The Wolverines were aided by a controversial clock in their first victory of 2026 against Western Michigan. Bryce Underwood really struggled in that matchup, which resulted in Coach Kyle Whittingham saying his job security is “not infinite.” After a 51-0 victory over UTEP in Week 1, Coach Brent Venables, John Mateer, and the Sooners visit A2 as short favorites. This preview has some Oklahoma vs Michigan picks and best bets you are looking for.

The narratives and angles are obvious for these two teams entering Saturday. During the summer, Michigan was a favorite in this matchup. After Saturday night’s debacle in front of millions on NBC, the public has fallen in love with the Oklahoma spread.
If you listen or read content from someone that is reliant on their model, Michigan is a close your eyes and take the newly found value type of pick. Most others will reference how pitiful of a performance the Wolverines put on display last weekend and say that the Sooners have a much more talented defense and team in general.
How Michigan Covers +5.5
Michigan needs this matchup to be a rock fight in order to stay within reach. The Wolverines’ defense was great against the defending MAC Champs last week, but in the second half they struggled to get a big stop. A lot of that was probably caused by Western Michigan’s 40:08 Time Of Possession. UM’s 11-man unit can pressure and distress Mateer in the pocket and cause the OU offense to stutter.
Nobody should expect massive improvement from QB Bryce Underwood in Week 2 compared to Week 1. However, if Offensive Coordinator Jason Beck and UM can sustain longer drives than their 19:52 T.O.P. last week, that will help the Wolverines’ defense tremendously.
Offensively, at the skill positions, Michigan has playmakers. 6-foot-7 receiver and Utah transfer, JJ Buchanan, is an emerging star and Andrew Marsh was Underwood’s top target last season. Add in a talented running back duo in Jordan Marshall and freshman 5-star Savion Hiter and UM has big play ability.
All of the above is meaningless if their quarterback can’t do the little things. Underwood’s ability to diagnose a defense pre-snap, throwing mechanics, decision-making, and going through his progressions have held this offense back throughout his first 14 career games. Furthermore, pre-snap penalties and turnovers killed Michigan against WMU.
With all that said, Venables and the Sooners’ ferocious defense should have their way into confusing the raw, talented former 5-star QB. Expect a lot of quick passes, QB runs/scrambles, and a steady dosage of Marshall and Hiter from the maize and blue.
How Oklahoma Covers -5.5
This is a simple handicap. In his second career game donning the crimson and cream, QB John Mateer was phenomenal against Michigan last year. Statistically, it was Mateer’s best game of the season. He completed 21 of his 34 passes and threw for 270 yards, ran for another 74 yards on 19 rushes, and accounted for three total touchdowns.
In past years, the Sooners have struggled to sustain a run game. This season Oklahoma’s offense looks significantly different. OC Ben Arbuckle utilized 12-Personnel a ton in their first matchup against UTEP. OU could attempt to duplicate the Western Michigan formula of controlling the game script, but with more talented position players and an improved O-Line.
NFL Draft picks clutter the defensive side of the ball for Oklahoma. There is a really good chance we see Venables load the box and dare Underwood to take the top off the defense. The sim pressures and unlimited blitz schemes will most likely confuse Underwood at the line of scrimmage all day.
Under 43.5: Oklahoma vs Michigan Picks
The under 43.5 is a really good pick based off the pure defensive talent and scheming we will see in this matchup. The UTEP game was stress-free for OU, and we didn’t learn a ton about their new look offense. Add in a couple of quarterbacks that don’t excel in reading defenses and the expectation is that this will not be a shootout.
Over 32.5 John Mateer Rushing Yards: Oklahoma vs Michigan Picks
Last year Mateer dashed for 74 yards on 19 rushes. Western Michigan QB Broc Lowry was sacked a couple of times but still scrambled for 35 yards on 15 attempts. In this matchup, I would not be surprised if we see some old habits from Mateer. If his first option is not immediately available, he has a tendency to want to tuck and run.
