MMA Regional Pick of the Week: LFA 237
LFA Welterweight Fight: Joey Hart vs James Martin
Card Start Time: Friday (7/24), 7:30pm EST (VICE TV)
On Friday evening, we have a classic matchup between a guy who’s been there and a guy who’s looking to get there. Joey Hart already had his chance at the UFC when he appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series. In 2024 he dropped a controversial split decision to Benjamin Bennett. Meanwhile, James Martin is a hot prospect – sitting at 5-0 and looking for his shot at the next level.
When it comes to a stylistic breakdown of this fight, I like the veteran – Joey Hart. On the feet he will have massive advantages. He not only is crafty and sharp with his striking, but he also will have a huge 6.5″ reach advantage. That along with the knees he uses in the clinch should make him dangerous throughout the fight.
Of course, the line is still close on this fight because Martin has some solid wrestling skills. He has a clear path to victory if he can consistently get Hart down. However, I really like what I saw in the wrestling improvements from Hart last time out. He fought a tough regional opponent in Collin Huckbody, who also has sharp wrestling skills. His takedown defense largely held up and he punished to the body just about every time he got the chance.
If Hart can continue to make gains in the ground game, this shouldn’t be as close as the line suggests.
