MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 19
Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 12:15 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – Peacock
Kicking off our Sunday action is the matinee over on Peacock. The White Sox head north of the border for a date with Trey Yesavage and the Blue Jays. Yesavage hasn’t quite been what people expected following last postseason, but he has been solid. He sports a 3.72 ERA going into Sunday’s action and has held opponents to two or less runs in three of his last four starts. The White Sox are an above average hitting team, but were held scoreless by the Jays on Saturday. Yesavage should pick right up where they left off.
In the bottom of the first, we have a much worse hitting team. The Blue Jays rank 27th in the majors in run scoring with just 4.05 runs per game. They also rank 27th in the league in first inning scoring – with only the Padres, Red Sox and Giants worse than them. That’s music to the ears of Sean Burke who toes the rubber on Sunday. Over his last five starts (32.0 innings), he’s allowed just six earned runs and struck out 42 batters. That comes out to a 1.69 ERA for that span and means he shouldn’t have issues with Toronto.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 19: No (-125)
San Francisco Giants vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – ESPN
As previously mentioned, the Giants are one of three teams worse than the Blue Jays in the first inning. That’s because they are, in fact, the worst team in the majors at scoring first inning runs. They’re also in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring overall, which means that they are going to struggle with Logan Gilbert. Gilbert ranks in the top 20 in all the major pitching statistics – ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts.
To close this one out, we get Seattle, who has also been brutal at the plate. Their 4.00 run per game average is 28th best in the majors and they are just 26th in first inning scoring. If they are going to change that tune, it’s not likely going to come at the expense of Robbie Ray. In his last five starts (33.1 innings), he’s allowed just four earned runs for an ERA of 1.08. He’s also only allowed 17 hits in that span. It’s unlikely that the Mariners will get to him all day, never mind the first inning.
