Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Vegas 118
UFC Flyweight Fight: Bruno Silva vs Edgar Chairez
Start Time: Saturday (6/6) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
Early on in the night, we have an interesting flyweight fight between a couple of guys who have been through the ringer in their UFC stints. Bruno Silva is just 1-3 over his last four fights, but has dropped fights to current champ, Joshua Van, Charles Johnson, and Manel Kape. Although Chairez has had a bit better results, 3-2 with a no contest in his last six, the losses have been similarly strong. They were to each of the two fighters in the last flyweight title fight – Tatsuro Taira and the aforementioned Van.
While their rough roads have defined them, it’s the skillset that sets them apart. This is where I believe Silva shines. He’s a tough wrestler with both speed and power on the feet. He has finishes in every single one of his five wins in the UFC – three by KO and two by submission. It’s those well-rounded skills and dangerous nature that gives him a big advantage here.
Chairez has some good submissions skills. He’s picked up two of his three UFC wins that way. However, he lacks the wrestling skills needed to be in control there. He has a 0% takedown accuracy, which means that if Silva wants this standing, it should stay standing. Plus, if it does hit the ground, Silva should have the positional advantages and the smarts to stay out of a submission.
