MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 2
Minnesota Twins vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the matinee on Thursday, the Twins will come to the plate first. They haven’t exactly been tearing the cover off of the ball on the year – averaging just 3.0 runs per game (going into Wednesday’s action). They are also just one of a handful of teams who have not managed a first inning run on the year. Now they’ll try to break that trend with Cole Ragans on the bump. While his first start didn’t look stellar, Ragans was amazing down the stretch last season. He held a 2.77 ERA in the final month with 22 strikeouts in 13.0 innings. With an easier opponent on the field, look for him to return to a version similar to that.
While the Twins were struggling on offense, the Royals have somehow been even worse. In their first four games, they managed just nine total runs. They, too, are one of the only teams left that have not scored in the first inning. Their foe for this one is Taj Bradley, who shoved last time out. In 4.1 innings, he allowed just one run to Baltimore while striking out nine batters. If he brings more of that swing and miss stuff, we should cash this NRFI without a sweat.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 2: No (TBD)
New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants
First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the nightcap, we’ll see Robbie Ray toe the rubber first. The former Cy Young winner looked great in his debut against the Yankees. He held them to just two runs over 5.2 innings and struck out four. He’ll draw a Mets squad that has looked absolutely confused at the plate lately. They’ve scored just one run in their last 23 innings and were allowed to start with runners at second in two of those. With as hard as they’re slumping, I expect Ray to get us three quick outs.
The Giants are another team that can’t seem to find the bats early in the season. They have just 13 runs over their first six games with nine of those coming in the same game. If you don’t count their game against the tail end of the Padres rotation, they’ve actually only scored four total runs. David Peterson shouldn’t make that any easier on them. He threw 5.1 scoreless against the Pirates to open the season and should be able to keep that streak rolling for at least one more inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 2: No (TBD)
