MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 19
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Diamondbacks are a below average team when it comes to scoring runs, and they’ve been much worse than that to kick off this week. In the first three games of the week, they’ve only managed eight total runs (2.33 per game). To make matters worse, they have ranked in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring all year. A date with Payton Tolle is unlikely to make these woes any better. Tolle is rocking a 2.97 ERA on the year and has fanned 10.02 per nine innings on the year. He should breeze through that first inning and get this NRFI started right.
Closing out the NRFI will be one of the hottest arms in all of baseball. Brandon Pfaadt entered the month of July with a 5.40 ERA and enters this game with it all the way down to 3.11. Over that two month span, he’s put up a 1.09 ERA, which includes 32.2 consecutive innings without a single earned run allowed. Boston is a lot hotter than they were earlier in the year, but they still rank 26th in the majors in first inning scoring. They might be the team to break up Pfaadt’s scoreless streak, but he should be able to tack one more inning on first.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (-135)
San Francisco Giants vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Giants are another team we’re all about fading at the plate. Everything in this one points to them continuing to struggle at the plate. They rank in the bottom third of run scoring in the majors, they are 29th in the majors in first inning scoring, and they also have just 18 runs scored over their last five games (3.60 per game). As if we needed one more reason to doubt them, Parker Messick is on the hill on Wednesday. He’s got a 2.59 ERA on the year and is striking out a batter per inning.
The bottom of the inning features another team we love to fade. Cleveland is one of three teams in the league that come in under 4.00 runs per game on the year. They’ve also scored just 19 runs over their last five games (3.80 per game). They’ll try to break that trend against the MLB debut of Matthew “Tugboat” Wilkinson. The 270lbs lefty has been mowing people down in the majors and there should be a learning curve as major leaguers see him for the first time.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (-150)
Bonus Pick: Tigers/Pirates NRFI (-125)
