Norfolk State to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

Norfolk State doesn’t return any starters from last season’s run, but they’re still the team to beat in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Spartans reloaded through the portal, and they clearly have a system that works in the MEAC.

Norfolk State’s transfer portal haul starts with UNC Wilmington transfer guard Elijah Jamison and New Hampshire transfer guard Anthony McComb III. Both are seniors, and both have clearly defined roles in the Spartans’ backcourt. Jamison will likely play more like a ball-dominant point guard who can shoot. McComb III is more of an athletic slasher who will score. Both players should be in the mix for the All-MEAC team at the end of the year.

Jamison and McComb III will be joined in the backcourt by Texas A&M-CC transfer Dian Wright-Forde. Wright-Forde is meant to play a three-and-D role with the Spartans this year. He’s also in his senior year and played a key role off the bench with the Islanders last year

In the front court, Norfolk State should start with Saint Peter’s transfer forward Jaquel Morris and Wagner transfer Keyontae Lewis. Again, both players are entering their senior seasons, and they both have clear roles. Morris is here to clean up the boards, and Lewis eats space in the post and is an absolute load on the blocks.

The Spartans will round out their bench with Valparaiso transfer forward Devon Lewis and a pair of capable JUCO transfers. Norfolk State also brought in a freshman duo that could see time on the floor this year. Freshman point guard Adrean Newton has impressive quickness and a high basketball IQ, and freshman wing Ahmad Torrance was a prolific scorer in high school.

Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones has been in Norfolk, VA, for over a decade. Jones has racked up 20 or more wins in each of the last four seasons. This program is the wagon of the MEAC. The guard play will be among the best in the conference, and the front court has a lot to offer. Norfolk State should win the regular season and make a run in the conference tournament yet again. No one else is really close to the Spartans at this point.
