The Washington Commanders survived last week without their star sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels, who sat out with a sprained left knee. Whether or not they will have to try to do the same this coming Sunday, however, is still unknown.
The 2024 NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year says, for his part, that he’s feeling fine heading into this weekend after missing the first NFL game of his young career.
“I feel good, so I don’t think [the knee] affects me,” Daniels told reporters today, but explained that his status for Sunday is up to the medical team. “It’s up to the doctors, not my decision.”
After not practicing all last week, Daniels was a limited participant in Commanders’ practice today, but did plenty of running, cutting, planting, and sliding to test out his injured wheel. He was, however, wearing a brace on his knee.
“It’s something to get used to,” Daniels said when asked about the possibility of wearing the brace in a game. “The doctors haven’t said that decision yet, so that will be a conversation.”
The 2-1 Commanders didn’t miss Daniels too much, surprisingly, last week, beating the Las Vegas Raiders 41-24. Daniels’ replacement lining up behind center, Marcus Mariota, went 15-21 for 207 yards and a touchdown in the victory, while also adding 40 rushing yards.
“Super happy for him,” Daniels said of Mariota. “He deserves everything. He’s my biggest supporter, so it was my turn last week to be his.”
Degenerate Spin: Fantasy owners with Jayden Daniels on your roster, keep your fingers crossed (or have Mariota rostered to be safe). For the degens, I have Washington as a two-point favorite at Atlanta this week, but that is based on Daniels playing. The line at the books is at 1.5, so this may be a Falcons play come gametime.
