The trainers’ room is getting busy in the Seattle Seahawks headquarters, as the team is walking wounded heading into their Week 3 game on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The Seahawks’ secondary has been ravaged by injuries, and on the other side of the ball, starting running back Zach Charbonnet will be out of action.
We’ll start on the offensive side of the ball. While Charbonnet hasn’t been overly effective this season for the Seahawks (57 yards, one touchdown), he’s basically splitting the touches with Ken Walker III, and he tallied over 900 yards last year for the team. The third-year back injured his toe in last week’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and is doubtful to play on Sunday.
The secondary, meanwhile, is devastated with injuries. Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon, Pro Bowl safety Julian Love, and backup rookie safety Nick Emmanwori are all expected to be sidelined when the Saints are in town this weekend. However, the team was without WItherspoon and Emmanwori last weekend against the Steelers and still won. While Love played through a groin injury in that game, he added a hamstring injury to his woes.
Another consideration is what is on deck for the Seahawks in Week 4. The team will hit the road to face their divisional rival, the Arizona Cardinals, and what’s worse, it’s a Thursday Night Football game, meaning less recovery time for their walking (limping) wounded.
Degenerate Spin: Despite all the players expected to be out of action on Sunday, the Seahawks are still a 7.5-point favorite over the Saints, which speaks more to how crummy New Orleans is rather than how strong Seattle is. My line for the game is 8.5, but that’s with a healthy team, so New Orleans plus the points might be the play.
