The San Francisco 49ers might be off to a 2-0 start to the season, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for them. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy picked up two injuries in the team’s Week 1 win at Seattle. However, there could be good news on the horizon for the team – there’s a chance that Purdy will be taking snaps again come Sunday.
Purdy hurt his shoulder on an incompletion in Week 1, then injured his toe later in the game, with the injury being called a “turf toe variant”, which could be a good fantasy football team name. A week ago at this time, Purdy was considered a long shot to suit up for that weekend’s game, which he missed. However, he was a limited participant in practice today, which is progress.
“He wasn’t limited last week,” San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after practice on Wednesday. “He does have a chance [to play].”
While Purdy did some throwing drills in practice, the team is expected not to rush him back until he’s 100% healthy. And after backup Mac Jones’ performance in Week 2 (279 yards, three touchdowns), they probably feel even less pressure to hurry Purdy along.
“In this league, whether or not you’re a starter or a backup, you got to be ready to go at any point,” 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey told reporters. “In the NFL, you just never know. It’s such a talented league and so many great players on the field. And Mac obviously is somebody who’s proven himself already, but to have him as our backup is huge.”
Degenerate Spin: It doesn’t sound super-promising at this point that Purdy will be starting against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, but the possibility of him suiting up as a backup has been floated around. If you picked up Mac Jones in fantasy, don’t drop him yet. San Fran is listed as -2.5 on the betting board, which is a number I’d hold off on playing until it’s certain Purdy is back.
