He may have played poorly in Week 1 while his recently drafted successor watched from the sidelines, but the New York Giants state they are still in the Russell Wilson business. The Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowler Wilson will remain taking the snaps for the Giants for Week 2 and for the foreseeable future. At least that’s the current plan.
Since they’re a Big Apple team, it’s no surprise that controversy arose immediately after Wilson put up a dud in a Week 1 loss (17-37, 168 yards). But after speculation that rookie Jaxson Dart might get the start (that rhymes like dimes) this weekend, the Giants quickly put that to bed and backed Wilson. And sources with the team say there is no rush to throw Dart into game action.
“I’m just preparing for whatever chance I get,” Dart told reporters on Friday. “So there is not a specific game plan or something like that. It’s me just trying to be prepared and be ready whenever my number is called. Anytime that you don’t win, people talk, and things like that happen. It’s completely different if you win. You have to take all that with a grain of salt, and my job is to control what I can control and be the best teammate I can be.”
It doesn’t help Dart’s case that left tackle Andrew Thomas is still out of action for Week 2. You don’t want a rookie in there with inadequate coverage on his blind side.
Degenerate Spin: If you drafted Wilson on your fantasy team, you are relieved to hear this news. But still, he needs to produce on the field to make these rumors go away for good. As for gamblers for Week 2, this isn’t really news, so as you were.
