We put up a split performance on Tuesday. The Braves and Cubs really stepped up for us with Shota Imanaga and Joey Wentz getting us a clean first frame. Now we’ll look to do it again with our NRFI bets for September 3.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 3
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Dodgers are, of course, a risky team to be playing on the NRFI market. However, I really like the pitching matchup in this one. The Pirates will lean on the right arm of Braxton Ashcraft. He carries a 2.58 ERA into action on Wednesday and he’s put those numbers to shame lately. In his last four starts, he’s allowed just three total runs. That gives us a 1.42 ERA for him in that stretch. Already that gives me some faith that he can retire the Dodgers quickly in the first. If you need more convincing, consider that the Dodgers have only scored 13 runs in their last four games (3.25 runs per game).
The bottom of the inning should be a lot less of a question mark. Firstly, Shohei Ohtani is on the bump for Los Angeles. Although his surface numbers aren’t as great as you might expect, he looked excellent against the Reds last time out. You have to love his chances to double down on that with the Pirates at the plate. They rank dead last in runs scored and are one of just five teams who are under 4.00 runs per game. They also rank in the bottom third in first inning runs per game. Ohtani should waltz right through this half and cash this one for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 3: No (-125)
Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game involves a pair of teams who just can’t get it going at the plate. The Twins come in at 23rd in the majors in runs scored and are somehow significantly better than the White Sox. The White Sox are another one of the teams that have less than 4.00 runs a game. That puts them in 26th in the league. Both are struggling to find runs and then we also get a solid pitching matchup.
The Twins send out Zebby Matthews, who has been pretty solid for them. He’s allowed three or less runs in four of his five starts in the month of August. He went in and mowed down a tough Padres team last time out, which gives me all the faith I need for him to do it again.
On the other side, we get Yoendrys Gomez, who has looked good since getting called back up. In the four starts since his return to the bigs, he’s put up a 3.86 ERA. That includes holding this very same Twins team scoreless for 4.2 innings while striking out six.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 3: No (-115)
