Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Nashville
UFC Middleweight Fight: Chris Curtis vs Max Griffin
Start Time: Saturday (7/12) 6:30pm EST (ESPN+)
Chris Curtis is one of my favorite lines from this UFC Nashville card. Sure, it’s a bit chalky, but I think there is still value to be had on him here.
For one, I love that he’s coming back down to welterweight. He’s exclusively fought at middleweight in the UFC because that’s where the opportunity showed up. He took a late replacement fight to get into the company and then just stayed there. However, if you look at his best work outside of the organization, Curtis was a multi-time regional champion at 170lbs. He even took Belal Muhammad to a tough decision in a main event.
Max Griffin, meanwhile, has been on a skid. He hasn’t won a fight that wasn’t a split decision in three years and has had particular trouble with those who box well. Curtis should be able to outpoint him and may even bring surprising power now that he’s fighting guys 15lbs smaller than before.
