MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 9

Texas Rangers vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the first of our two selections we should see a very easy top of the first inning. Reigning AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, gets the ball for the Tigers in efforts to stifle the offense of the Rangers. That shouldn’t be that hard of a task for him. On one hand, he’s Tarik Skubal – a man holding down a 2.21 ERA with 48 strikeouts in just 40.2 innings. On the other hand, the Rangers haven’t been hitting all that well. They rank 28th in runs scored in the league and are in the bottom third of runs scored in the first inning.

Although the top of the first shouldn’t be much sweat, we might still have to worry about this one a bit. The Tigers, for one, are a much better hitting offense than the Rangers. In addition, they don’t have a Cy Young winner on the bump. They do have a resurgent Patrick Corbin though. Despite all the jokes about him in recent years, he’s put up a solid season so far. He’s posted a 3.28 ERA and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last four outings. That run gives me the confidence I need to get behind this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 9: No (-120)

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Tampa Bay rays

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

This is another game where one half of the inning is going to have to be the sweaty one. The top of the first is the issue here. Zack Littell’s numbers haven’t been earth shattering, and the Brewers offense is pretty good. However, I really like how he looked in his last start. Facing the Yankees, Littell went 7.0 strong, allowing only two earned runs. That could be the start of a really good run, as he’s shown signs of life latelu. He’s allowed three or less earned runs in each of his last four and I believe he can keep the first frame blank on Friday.

Closing out our NRFI plays is Jose Quintana. He, like Corbin, has been the butt of some jokes in recent years. However, his 2025 has been outstanding. While he was shelled by the Cubs last time out, it only brought his ERA up to 2.83. He went into that game with a 1.14 ERA – having only allowed three earned runs all year. With the Rays ranking 22nd in MLB in terms of runs scored, I expect the veteran to get back on track here for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 9: No (-105)
