MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 20
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Pirates have become a popular NRFI play as of late thanks to their inability to get on the board early. Their recent rough patch has dropped them to 29th in the majors in first inning runs – just ahead of the White Sox. It’s not much better over the whole game as they have just nine runs scored in the last four games (2.25 per game). Nick Martinez will not make matters easier on them. He has allowed just two earned runs over his last three starts (18.2 innings).
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll see a slightly hotter hitting team, but barely. The Reds have scored just 12 runs in their last four games (3.0 per game). Their last two games with Atlanta saw them score just four runs and squander a lot of base runners. Mitch Keller will look to keep that trend going on Friday. He is coming off of back-to-back quality starts and has a respectable 3.87 ERA coming into the game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (-125)
Chicago White Sox vs. San Diego Padres
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our nightcap NRFI leans on one of our favorite targets – Garrett Crochet. Although he’s been throwing less innings lately, he’s been solid in the early ones. He’s held the NRFI together in five of his last six starts. The Padres bats aren’t lighting the world on fire right now either. They scored just 10 runs in the whole series against the Astros despite winning two of three. Crochet should be able to settle in and get us three outs.
On the other side, we luckily have the White Sox coming to the plate. They rank dead last in most meaningful hitting metrics this year. Their last in first inning runs and runs in general. I might take a pitching machine to get this NRFI done for us. However, we’ll get someone a touch better in Joe Musgrove. He’s held his opponents scoreless in three of his last five outings. This one should be a fourth to that list.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (-145)
