MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 7

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – ESPN+

In the top half of the first inning, Reynaldo Lopez takes to the bump to do what he’s been doing all season. He’s strunts into Sunday’s contest with a major league leading 1.83 ERA and he’s been just as good lately. The Cy Young contender has only allowed six earned runs in his last five starts. Plus, he’s struck out at least five in each of his last six starts. While the Phillies are a good hitting team, they fresh off Saturday’s contest where they scored just one in six innings off of Spencer Schwellenbach. Lopez should be able to give us three outs.

On the other side, the Braves offsense has also come to live a bit, but on the year it hasn’t been great. They rank just 15th in the league in runs scored. They’ll face an unfamiliar face on Sunday in Michael Mercado. The Phillies prospect comes into the game highly touted by prospect types. FanGraphs listed him as one of Philadelphia’s top 10 prospects and he showed it in his short stint with the big club. In his lone major league start, he held the Cubs to just one run on two hits over 5.0 innings. The Braves should take at least a time through the order to really figure him out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 7: No (-115)

Detroit Tigers vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Tigers shouldn’t have any trouble keeping the Reds at bay here. Cincinnati has been a middle of the pack offense and has been even worse in the first inning. They’re ranked 24th in the league in first inning runs and facing Tarik Skubal should make matters worse. His 2.45 ERA and 0.93 WHIP gives me all the confidence that I need. However, he’s also coming off of back-to-back quality starts against the hot offenses of the Phillies and the Twins. He’s struck out at least seven batters in his last three and in four of his last five. This Reds team shouldn’t give him any trouble.

Some might see the opposing pitcher and get scared off of this NRFI. Despite Graham Ashcraft’s 5.45 ERA and recent results, he’s actually a target for NRFIs for me. He’s been great to start games – it’s later on that usually costs him. In his last ten games, he has thrown a scoreless first inning nine times. That includes a game with the Yankees, the Padres, two with the Diamondbacks and two with the Dodgers. Not only that, but his last outing with the Yankess was solid for five innings. He held them scoreless until the sixth inning. With all of that being said, I’m comfortable with him trying to limit a bottom third offense.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 7: No (-135)
