Oakland at UC-Santa Barbara
Start Time: 4:00 PM EST
Oakland has started the season 0-2 and has a 1-1 mark against the spread. UC-Santa Barbara is 1-0 with a win over DII San Francisco State.
The handicap for this game is simple. Oakland is playing a back-to-back that features a six-hour bus ride from Stanford, CA to Santa Barbara, CA. The Golden Grizzlies just got beat down by Stanford and have to turn around and face a rested UC-Santa Barbara team in their arena.
UC-Santa Barbara is at the very edge of the top-100 teams in the country. The Gauchos have a solid rotation in their back court and have multiple big men that can defend in the paint. UC-Santa Barbara could run a weary Oakland team off the floor and should blow this one open. Let’s fade the turnaround and travel and lay the points with the team that has a better roster and is fully rested.
Best Bet: UC-Santa Barbara -12.5
Providence vs Nebraska
Start Time: 7:00 PM EST
This game will be played at a neutral site in Uncasville, CT.
Both teams won and covered their season openers. Nebraska put a beating on Le Moyne in Lincoln, NE, while Providence wrecked Maine in Providence.
Nebraska comes into this game as a favorite based on last year’s reputation. The Cornhuskers only return one starter and a few rotation pieces from last year’s squad. This year’s team is built mostly out of the recent portal class and isn’t quite the same. Nebraska played well in their opener, but let’s see how they play against a team that thrives on taking the ball away and winning in transition.
Providence is in Year One with new coach Bryan Hodgson. The Friars return one starter from last year, but have a solid group coming in. The portal class is highlighted by experienced guards Malick Mack and Myles Byrd, and a trio of capable big men. Providence also has a dynamic group of freshmen that serve as rotation pieces on their roster. The Friars will throw a lot of pressure at Nebraska, and they should be able to make shots when they get opportunities. They’ll also have a sizeable contingent of fans as this game is played about an hour away from their campus.
This looks like a one-possession game on paper, and Providence could win this outright. The Friars are the side here.
Best Bet: Providence +2.5
San Jose State at UC-Irvine
Start Time: 10:00 PM EST
San Jose State started the season by winning and covering at home against a really poor UTSA squad. UC-Irvine put a beating on DIII Chapman in their season opener.
The Anteaters won and covered against San Jose State as a short favorite in San Jose, CA.
UC-Irvine returns two starters and several rotation pieces from a team that finished in first place in the Big West Conference last year. They brought in a few freshmen, but most of the new faces in the rotation this year were redshirted last year. The only real piece added through the transfer portal was Florida big man Olivier Rioux. Rioux is the tallest player in DI basketball. He played 18 minutes in the matchup with Chapman and racked up a double-double in short order.
San Jose State returns zero starters from last year’s team and is made up of a transfer portal grab bag, a few returners from last year’s bench, and a couple of guys returning from injury.
This is a matchup of a good system team playing at home against a team that hasn’t spent much time together and outplayed a UTSA team that should end the year at the very bottom of the AAC. The side we want to be on is the team that has a plan and has spent more time together. The Anteaters have clear advantages all over the floor and should blow this one open late.
Best Bet: UC-Irvine -8.5
